Marvel has been on a crazy run lately, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day hitting $2B at the box office, to Avengers: Doomsday coming out in December. You may think that they can’t get any crazier with more announcements, right? Well, that has changed after Marvel’s panel at D23, which is essentially a showcase where Disney announces its upcoming films, teases new projects, and shares first clips. This year brought one of the most anticipated announcements: the cast for the rebooted X-Men movie, set to release on May 5, 2028. Spoiler alert: Spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day ahead.
The first report that we got about the X-Men movie was that the director would be none other than Jake Schreier, who directed Marvel’s Thunderbolts. Then, on Aug. 12, it was reported that the cast of the new X-Men film would include Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Samara Weaving, known for her role in Ready or Not, as Emma Frost, and Kit Connor, known for his role in Heartstopper, as Cyclops. Even though we already knew that our Jean Grey would be Sink coming off of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the heavy rumors of Connor as Cyclops and Weaving as Emma Frost boosted audience excitement, including mine. Then, there was another rumor that our Rogue would be Cailee Spaeny, and our Beast would be Charles Melton. They have both appeared in and received praise for their roles in the Netflix show Beef. When I heard these rumors, I was honestly very excited; the actors look like the characters and have great range. I was not opposed to the choices, and even though they were rumors, I still hoped they would be confirmed soon. After those rumors surfaced, an interview with Inde Navarrette, known for her breakout role as Nikki in Obsession, was released, where she said she has met with Schreier many times and would love to play Mystique. Honestly, when I first heard that, I could definitely see her playing Mystique, but at the same time, my fancast would be Hunter Schafer, known for her role in Euphoria.
That changed on Aug. 14, when Marvel’s panel happened. While it had been reported earlier that our X-Men casting confirmations would be announced, there was still so much anticipation about who would be playing who. The announcement ended the thousands of rumors and fancasts circulating before the event, and now we have our cast. As said before, Sink is our Jean Grey, Connor is our Cyclops, and Weaving is our Emma Frost. However, more castings were announced, as our Professor Charles Xavier will be Christopher Abbott, our Storm will be Maya Boyd, our Mr. Sinister will be Adam Driver, and our Rogue will be Inde Navarrette. Insane plot twist with Navarrette, since she did express interest in being Mystique. As said before, it was also announced that the movie will be in theaters on May 5, 2028.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with most of the casting choices. I think each actor fits the role and would do a great job. On the other hand, there are a few that I think could be different. Navarrette does have an amazing career ahead of her, and I’m excited to see where she goes. I do think her as Rogue wasn’t the worst choice, but I don’t see it as much as I could see her portraying Kitty Pryde, and I believe a lot of people felt the same way. That being said, Navarrette will probably change my mind when the movie comes out. Hopefully, in the future, we’ll get not only our confirmation about Beast, but also more casting announcements for the movie.
