The famous Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, has been gone far too long. After her “death” in the disappointing film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans wondered when she would return. There have been hints and rumors that she could return in Avengers: Doomsday, but only time will tell. Besides that, someone in the Maximoff family has attracted audiences; his name is Vision. Spoiler alert: spoilers for VisionQuest, WandaVision, Agatha All Along, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Avengers: Endgame ahead.
Following the events of WandaVision, the biggest difference is that our current version of Vision is not the same one we’ve seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron or Avengers: Infinity War; this version is called White Vision, and he was created by S.W.O.R.D. using the energy Wanda generated in her magical town of Westview. Initially, he was used as a weapon, devoid of personality or emotion, with the sole purpose of destroying Wanda and her illusory Vision. During the confrontation, illusory Vision unlocks White Vision’s original memories, from when he was first created by Ultron to the beginning of his love story with Wanda, and finally to his death in Avengers: Infinity War. White Vision declared himself the true Vision and flew away, leaving us no indication of what had happened to him. However, that has changed with the Marvel television show VisionQuest, which recently aired on Disney+.
The episodes released so far tell us that White Vision is now trying to overcome his identity crisis. Under his human disguise, he spends time at a pub where he and Wanda used to enjoy each other’s company. While he does possess the original memories of Vision, he lacks an emotional connection to them. He feels like a data-driven machine, rather than a human with emotions. However, much like Wanda’s illusory town, Vision too has his own little town, but more so because of his artificial intelligence (AI) programming. There, he interacts with the human versions of Tony Stark’s (or Iron Man’s) AI. You may remember the ones like J.A.R.V.I.S. or E.D.I.T.H.; they’re all there! And the craziest part: Ultron is there as well. Yep, the one who created Vision is there, and let’s just say he is up to no good. We also learn about what has happened to one of the Maximoff twins, Tommy. For those who are unaware (or just haven’t watched Agatha All Along, which you should), Tommy Maximoff and Billy Maximoff are the twin sons of Vision and Wanda. However, after the events of WandaVision, they disintegrated because they were, again, all products of Wanda’s magic and were destroyed when Wanda let them go. However, their souls still remained, and they essentially found new hosts. Billy woke up in the body of a teenager named William, who died in a car crash. He has no recollection of being Billy, but has vague memories and dream-like visions of Westview. During Agatha All Along, he adopts the persona of Wiccan and uses his powers to search for his brother. For those who are unaware, Billy possesses reality-warping, psychic, and vast magical powers like his mother. We learn that Tommy’s soul has taken the body of a troubled teenager named Thomas, who died while drowning. The difference between Tommy and Billy is that Billy has found a family again with Agatha, while Tommy is isolated and experiencing an identity crisis. We also learn in the two episodes that Tommy has super-speed powers, like his uncle Quicksilver.
The first episodes that we’ve gotten were not only emotional, but also very intriguing. At first when this show was announced, I wasn’t really that excited about it. Vision is a great character in Marvel, don’t get me wrong, but I was a bit unsatisfied with how it felt a bit like WandaVision when I first heard about this show. Once the trailer and the posters were dropped, I was completely taken aback. Even after watching the first two episodes, this show definitely exceeded my expectations because they were kind of low at first. Now, they have surprised me with what we have been getting. My favorite moments so far have been with Vision and Tommy. While they aren’t the best because Tommy is just now learning about his powers and that his father is still alive, their dynamic was really father-son-like.
I can’t really say much about the positives and negatives of this show, as we have only gotten some episodes. However, I hope that Marvel will keep the father-son dynamic with Tommy and Vision, and they can reconcile their events. I would also love it if we actually got a scene with Tommy and Billy as they are now. I think their reunion would probably make me cry if they ever went down that route. Overall, these first few episodes have gotten me really excited for the rest of this season. Maybe this show could eventually lead to the events of Avengers: Doomsday?
