Five Cheap Eats in NYC on a College Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace chapter.
  1. Cheeky Sandwiches: Don’t blink! Otherwise, you just might miss this LES dive with off-the-charts food. Cheeky is tiny sandwich shop with a single bench to wait after placing your order at the counter. But, you know what they say, great things come in small packages! I had the chicken sandwich which is made up of fried chicken, a fluffy buttermilk biscuit, and hearty gravy. This will only cost you about $6.50 AND they even throw in a mini dessert! How awesome is that deal?
  1. Los Tacos No. 1: “Bringing Authentic Mexican Tacos to the East Coast” is there motto. Located in Chelsea Market and Times Square, Los Tacos No. 1 uses family recipes and fresh ingredients! I had one chicken and one pork taco. Each taco costs about $3.75 AND an added plus… guacamole is free!
  1. Melt Shop: With multiple locations across New York City, Melt Shop is the epitome of comfort food with various grilled cheese styles. Personally, I recommend the fried chicken sandwich paired with pepper jack cheese and melt sauce. This will only cost about $9.00. I also recommend the tater tots and Nutella shake too.
  1. Umami Burger: Originally located across the country, we are lucky enough to have multiple locations across New York City. Umami’s impossible burger is something to die for considering it’s a veggie burger that tastes exactly like meat! Also be sure to try their manly fries which are shoe-string fries, beer-cheese sauce, bacon, and onion strings. The burgers are definitely huge so if you decide to share with a friend, it will only cost about $10.00 to $12.00.
  1. Vanessa’s Dumplings: Amongst the millions of dumpling stops in Chinatown, this place by far takes the cake. Vanessa’s had some of the cheapest and tastiest dumplings around. Four chive and pork fried dumplings are $1.50 and eight boiled are $3.50, talk about an awesome deal!
I am an elementary education and special education major with a minor in psychology at Pace University. I love singing, playing the guitar reading, writing, shopping, and eating. My dream in the world is to help kids with special needs and be there beacon of hope as well as to travel a lot to see what the world has to offer!
