Celebrities Who Understood The Assignment For The Met Gala

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace chapter.

The theme? In America: An Anthology of Fashion- The Gilded Age. I love the Met Gala. I love focusing all of my attention on it, as if I know anything about fashion. There is obviously a lot to debrief after seeing all of the red carpet looks. There are also a lot of opinions. What I think might be on theme, others might think otherwise. There are also so many people who attend the Met, I cannot list them all. After going back and forth, with myself, I have decided to list my favorite looks of the night, or some looks that stood out to me.

Blake Lively in Versace

It’s giving Miss Lady Liberty. However, I think we can all agree that this was the best look of the night. The detail on the copper dress and the transition into the teal with the long train. The gloves, the earrings, and the tiara. Everything about this dress is absolutely gorgeous. I am still speechless.

Cardi B in Versace

Honestly, Cardi B looks so classy and elegant. From what I’ve read the Gilded Age is all about wealth and luxury and I think this dress perfectly represents that. The sleeves and the dress remind me of little gold coins. She was on theme and nailed it.

Shawn Mendes in Tommy Hilfiger

Finally, Shawn gave us something that was not a black suit and tie. I honestly really liked this piece. This is a perfect period piece and definitely stood out compared to the other men invited. Also, the fact that he was on theme too makes it so much better.

Billie Eilish in Gucci

Now this is everything. I think that Billie best defined what the Gilded Age was. The dress with the laced sleeves and the corset perfectly matches this era in American fashion. Also I love how the chocker ties in with hair. This was perfectly done. I also learned this that dress was completely up cycled and was made to be as eco-friendly as possible! Personally, I am amazed how Billie will only work with certain designers if they agree to her terms. For example, in the 2021 Met Gala she only worked with Oscar de la Renta if they stopped using fur. We love a queen who not only kills the runway but is also making change.

Lizzo in Thom Browne

If there is one thing that Lizzo does, is that she is owns the red-carpet. The corset dress is absolutely gorgeous, and I love how it is disconnected. The detail on the jacket and the length of it are also worth noting. I do think that this is a little 1920s and not so much Gilded Age, but this is the exception! Her hair, makeup, and jewelry help tie this look together. Also, her only accessory was a gold flute; that’s iconic.

Megan Thee Stallion in Moschino

It’s giving bald eagle. Megan did not do a literal piece but more of what the period represents. Again, it was all about wealth and luxury and this dress definitely screams money. The detail from the feather shoulder pads to the dress are absolutely stunning. She looked so powerful and proved once again that she is a hot girl.

Emma Chamberlain in Louis Vuitton

She is the Met. She always understands the assignment and exceeds as well. As always Emma looks stunning especially with the blonde hair and the tiara (which I did not notice at first). I feel like there was a vision of bringing modern fashion and gilded age fashion together. The top screams gilded age with the poofy shoulders, and the skirt is completely modern. This look has definitely grown on me, and I think Emma belongs at the Met every year.

The Kardashian-Jenner Family & Co.

I will not lie I am not a fan of their looks. Kim Kardashian wore the same dress as Marilyn Monroe, but this was not on theme. It would have been perfect for the Met 2021; however I think she did a great job paying homage to Marilyn. Kylie wore Off White, and I did not like it. I am not a fan of the bottom of the dress and the t-shirt mesh combo? Also the baseball cap? This was not on theme. Kendall was in Prada, and she definitely had my favorite look from this family. I feel like it’s kind of on theme but still has a modern take to it. I love how big and dramatic it is from far away but overall nothing special. Kris, Kourtney, and Khloe’s outfits did not stand out for me. Yes, they look beautiful, but I do not see the correlation to this theme. Also, Travis and Pete are serving black suit and tie as usual. This is the Met, the biggest night in fashion. Where are the dramatics? When are we going to step out of the box? If you’re going to only wear a suit and tie, at least put some effort into it.

Nicki Minaj and Olivia Rodrigo

Don’t get me wrong these ladies are so beautiful and they looked absolutely gorgeous, but I do not think it was in theme. Nicki Minaj was in Burberry, and I am obsessed with the skirt, and I think it stands out compared to other looks. However, why did she wear a baseball cap? Miss Olivia wore Versace and looked absolutely stunning. I loved the butterflies in her hair and the shade of purple is enchanting on her. However, I wish she stuck more to the theme.

Normani

I have not seen a lot of discussion for this dress. Normani ate this look and was still on theme. Her dress was designed by Christian Siriano. The hat with the puffy shoulders and big train is what I needed to see after seeing a lot of people not on theme. The makeup and the earrings are absolutely perfect. I think this outfit was a perfect blend of Gilded Age and modern fashion.
