Being single on Valentine’s Day can be a hardship in itself to many single people, but the dating atmosphere on a college campus can be particularly difficult to maneuver. There are, of course, still ways to combat the single sorrows we feel on this day dedicated to all things love and romance. Dating on a college campus can often be much different than dating in the “real world.” When living at the dorms offered at campuses all over the country, students are in compact spaces and often unable to avoid each other in their rooms, in classes and in hallways. It is inevitable that you will meet an array of people in college, and befriend a great deal of people. Being in such close quarters with such a large number of people means that many of your peers will date each other, and when you’re single, it can feel like you’re doing something wrong. Being single, especially on this day dedicated to love, can feel particularly difficult when you’re surrounded by people who are in relationships.

The most important thing to remember is that, though you may be single, you are not alone. Though you may be surrounded by couples, you are also surrounded by friends. Valentines Day does not only have to honor romantic love, we can also take the time to appreciate the platonic and familial love we have in our lives. It is also helpful to remember that February 14th is still just a day, and we can convey our love for those in our lives 365 days a year. Show yourself love this Valentine’s Day, you will find little reason to find another half when you realize that you are already whole.

College is a time in our lives when we are learning about ourselves, we are still allowed to make mistakes. Sometimes, it is easier to discover and love ourselves when we do not have the responsibility that is partnered with a relationship. Having a significant other can be fun, but you do not need to have everything settled into place at such a tender age. You have the rest of your life to receive a heart shaped box of chocolates on Valentines Day, so for now celebrate February 15th and the discounted candy broke college students everywhere can appreciate.
