Meet Taryn! She is a captain on the Oxy Women’s Soccer Team (:

Name: Taryn Ng

Year: Sophomore

Major/Minor: BioChemistry

What qualities do you have that make you a natural leader? – Being compromising and looking for the best interest of the group as a whole

How did you start playing soccer? – “I started when I was five years old and my dad made me do it because he wanted me to try some sports and I stuck with it for 14 years.”

What is it like being team captain of a sports team? – “Sometimes it feels like a lot of responsibility but overall I really enjoy it. It’s fun to be an integral part of a team.”

What’s it like being a BioChemistry major? Why have you chosen the major? – “It’s very very hard, and a lot of work and studying. I want to be a chemical engineer and plan on going to graduate school afterwards.”

What sparked your interest in science? – “Growing up, I’ve always had an affinity with sciences and have done shadow dates with chemical engineers and thought their job was very interesting. I think science is applicable to many fields.”

Why do you think you’re a Campus Celebrity? – “I don’t think I’m a Campus Celebrity, haha” (Taryn is very humble.)

Why did you choose Oxy? – “I chose Oxy for the small school environment, small class sizes, and playing soccer was a plus.”

Have you been able to have cool experiences with being involved in soccer on campus? – “I would say definitely some of the trips that we have gotten to take off campus with the team. My freshman year we went to San Diego and this past year we went to Santa Barbara. Hanging out with the team off campus to do team bonding was a lot of fun and helped build a strong sense of comradery.

Who inspires you the most? – “My mom has every good characteristic that I lack that includes patience. Throughout my life she has always been there to support me no matter what I do. She’s always there for me.”

Who are your role models? – “I love Emma Stone.”

What’s some advice you would give to a student that’s losing steam and hope? – “Definitely find something you’re passionate about and once you do, really set your mind to doing it, and do everything you can to achieve it.”

Are there any other life experiences that have shaped the person that you are today? – “When I was five, I was diagnosed with cancer. It introduced me to a sense of independence and how to stand on my own two feet. I was in a lot of pain and though my parents were there for me, they couldn’t help me through the process of physical recovery. It taught me responsibility because I had to go in for check ups and if I felt weird then I had to be aware and take care of myself better and bring it to the attention of the doctors.”

Why have you stuck with soccer for so long? – “Anything you do in life, you truly have to enjoy it. I stuck with soccer for so long because I love the game and I love to play and I love being a part of a team. Plain and simple.”
