I’m sure you’ve heard it before. Don’t procrastinate, create a study schedule, study now, and avoid cramming. Studying has always been the final step in preparing for an exam the next week (or the next day…hey, it happens!). I had my third midterm today and it was definitely nerve-wracking. However, it’s always rewarding to walk out of the lecture room knowing that you did the best that you could.
Midterms are known to be the cause of the lack of sleep and food. This can create a major impact on your physical and mental well being. These exams are a big part of the college year and make up a big percentage of your grades in your classes. Thinking about this can be extremely stressful, but don’t let it get to you!
Here are tips to help you through with the day, week, or month of midterms!
- Study ahead of time – Ever heard of Nike’s popular catchphrase? Just do it. Instead of setting aside time to watch your favorite show while wrapped up in your blankets, allot that time to studying. Exam dates are almost always posted in the class syllabus, so be sure to look over and take note of when they are so you can create an efficient study schedule for yourself. This way, you can take some time each day to look over notes or do review problems and fit in time for meals or exercise. Hey, if you happen to get done early one day, you could start watching your favorite episode of Mad Men – why hello there Don Draper.
- Stay organized – There is nothing like looking through heaps of papers and not find the one that you desperately need – you know, the ones with tons of equations on it? Sigh. Midterms are stressful. You don’t need to be stressed out about where your shoes, pens, or calculator is. Always remember to reorganize in the middle of the semester so that unnecessary worries don’t always need to pile up in your life.
- Find some time for yourself – You’ve been working and studying hard. Find some time to sleep, get some sun, or relax to your favorite music while enjoying a facial (lemon or rosewater is always nice!). Make time to call back home to your loved ones and friends. Midterms can turn your hair white, but it does not mean that it has to be completely dismal. You deserve to reward yourself, so please do!
What advice would you give to freshmen new to the midterms scene? What was the best midterm you ever had – or the worst? Let’s hear it!
