You’re browsing on the Internet, talking to older friends and you can’t help but try to find out the scoop on the school that you’re interested in. Besides wanting to know more about the academics of the college, you might have some of these questions bumbling around in your head: “What are the parties like? The classes? The dorms?” To be fair, we all have made our fair share of assumptions at a certain times in our lives. It’s natural to try to get to know more about something your interested in. In this case, it will be where you’ll be spending your next four years. Let’s begin!
- “You’ll be spending your next four years here”: Not exactly. The fact is, sending in your intent to register in May does not mean that the college that you choose will be what you’ve always been dreaming about. For some, it may take some time to adjust to a new environment. In the process, they may not end up liking it at all. So don’t feel the pressure to absolutely love your school the moment you step on campus. Again, it takes some time. BUT, do not give up on your choice either. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with transferring or taking a year off. Essentially, do what is best for you.
- “You’ll never have fun in college, it’s going to be all about work”: Hearing words like these make me appreciate my science teacher in high school even more. He taught me the value of managing my time. Yes, I do find myself in the library almost everyday but that’s just part of taking responsibility for the work that I need to keep on top of. Just do not go absolutely crazy with work; everyone needs a mental health day. As long as you master the art of “time management”, you don’t have to work all day. Remember, “work hard, play harder”. Go get ‘em girl!
- “Your roommates will become your best friends”: Roommate situations can either be ideal or absolutely miserable. Luckily, I get along well with my roomies. Your roommates are probably the first people that you’ll meet in college and get to know personally. However, with different schedules and interests it may be hard to find time to hang out with them or get to know them more. Don’t be sad if things don’t exactly spark between your rooming pals. Just remember to be considerate and friendly. You want to contribute towards an ideal living situation that everyone feels comfortable to go home to at the end of a stressful day.
- “You’ll have the weight of the world on your shoulders”: You won’t be left completely alone. Though it is your responsibility to do things such as keep yourself healthy, eat well, and go to class, there is help where you need it. Just remember that you have to ask for it. College is a time where you’re making choices as an adult, so take it step by step and make smart ones.
