Freshmen orientation is probably the first string of events that you will experience when you step onto your college campus. Here at Oxy, Orientation is a big deal. Freshmen are divided among orientation groups, or “O-Teams”, that are each headed by upperclassmen. Most of the time spent at orientation will involve getting to know new people, acquiring information about college life and activities, and exploring class options and the campus. Throughout these 5 days, the weather in Eagle Rock was hot and humid. Regardless, girls were still able to keep cool and look great! Here are some tips to start off your college experience fashionably and most importantly, comfortably.
Tips on What to Wear to Fall Orientation:
- Keep comfortable! – There is nothing worse than partaking in a college campus tour with a thick sweater or heels on. You’ll most likely be engaging in physical activity outside in the hot sun, so keep that in mind when deciding between the long sleeve t-shirt and shorts.
- Show off your personal style – Don’t be afraid to show off your personality with your outfit! If you like to dress up your outfit with tons of accessories or cannot seem to put that Nirvana shirt away in your closet, go ahead and sport it.
- Pack the simple stuff: t-shirts, shorts, cute sundresses, and sandals – Those four items are the easiest to pull on and use to create different outfit combinations.
- Consider some comfortable walking shoes – My personal favorite pair of sneakers are Keds. They’re cute and simple and can compliment almost every outfit. Your feet will thank you.
- Come with a pair of sunglasses – Whether it’s a pair of classic Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a pair that you found at a street stand or a local store, protect your eyes and look cute on a sunny day with your favorite sunglasses.
- Most importantly, SMILE and be gregarious. It also won’t hurt to have a great handshake (: Get out there and meet people!

Here are a few examples of outfit options:
A comfortable, loose t-shirt in a cute color paired with versatile white shorts with a braided belt, gold sandals and black sunglasses is a great alternative to just a regular t-shirt, denim pants, and sneakers.
Dresses were popular during orientation weeks. These two ladies show off different varieties in print and material of their dresses as well as their sandals – black and strappy leather or Birkenstocks.
This casual look is comprised of a tank top with a tribal print on it, black shorts and comfortable black shoes to match – simple and sweet!
This is an excellent look that can translate into the nighttime! Here, a breezy patterned top is paired with gold earrings, slim black pants with embellished bronze flats. If you are going out with your friends one night during orientation week, throw on a cute jacket/blazer and some heels/wedges.
