6 Best Tanning Spots on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxy chapter.

As the semester continues and spring approaches, the days are finally becoming tan-worthy.  Just last week it was almost 80 degrees! It’s time to pull out your bathing suit, throw on some sunscreen and soak in the days while you can.  Here are some of the Occidental’s best tanning spots for a little change of scene.

Chilcott and Haines– The grassy area between Haines and Chilcott is definitely one of my favorite spots to tan.  There is usually at least one other person tanning so it’s not too lonesome, and very few people walk past so you won’t feel self-conscious.  Also if you want to grab food real quick, it is conveniently close to the Cooler. The only downsides are the bugs. Beware of the ants!

Newcomb- While there isn’t much grass, the lawn stretching along the front of Newcomb is a popular spot for those residents.  Many cars and people pass by so it isn’t ideal for relaxing, but rather to hang out, do homework, and say hi to friends.

Stewie Beach- A popular spot for upper campus freshmen to hang out and relax is Stewie Beach. Although there is no sand or ocean, Stewie Beach probably gets the name because of its relaxed, yet social vibe you typically find on a beach. It is usually more populated on the weekends so if you want a quieter atmosphere the weekdays are better.

Wylie Lawn- For a more social tanning experience check out the patch of grass in front of Wylie. The traffic of people isn’t constant, but you are bound to see at least one person you know walking past.

Taylor Pool– The pool is the most popular and ideal spot to tan.  There are no bugs, no cars, nothing but people sitting out and enjoying the sun. If it gets too hot you can always take a refreshing swim.  According to the hours posted inside Rush Gym, the pool is open Monday/Wednesday/Friday 11 am – 4 pm, Tuesday/Thursday 1:30 pm -5 pm, Saturday/Sunday 12 pm – 6 pm.

The Greek Bowl- Although this location is more of a trek for some people, the quiet, private atmosphere makes it worth it.  I’ve never tried it out but I have heard that it has very few sunbathers.

President’s Garden– The most secluded spot to tan on campus is the President’s Garden.  Surrounded by trees and flowers, it’s the perfect place to tan and nap.

Reminder: before you go out into the sun always remember to wear sunscreen!!!
