Why I’m Into Fashion, but Not Into Yeezy

In a fashion industry where popularity sells, it’s time for an unpopular opinion!

I believe that’s it is finally time for the the true artists to rise.

Don’t get me wrong, Kanye is an artist, but when it comes to Yeezy Season 4, I feel like he needs to stick to music.

Yeezy Season 4 was a disaster, to say the least, but at the center of it all, I find that it lacked individuality and creativity. The collection screamed last minute to me, in regards to the construction of the garments, all the way to the designs. I think at the beginning Kanye had a vision, but now, that vision has sold out into thousand dollar sweatshirts with holes cut out and over the knee boots that are impossible to wear. I’m into fashion, not only because I write a fashion blog, but also because I grew up in the industry. I have many friends who work in fashion and have spent hours and months creating sketches, designs, patterns, and collections just to have someone look at their work and so they can show the world what they love.

You may be reading this and thinking, “Oh, she just hates the Kardashians and Kanye,” but in all honesty, that’s pretty far from the truth. I think they’ve done an amazing job creating an empire that cannot be beat in this day and age. At the same time, I can’t condone a fashion show that is done haphazardly when the young designers who will hallmark Fashion Week around the world in a few years have their work overshadowed.

When Kanye held his show during the Parsons Graduate Fashion Show, I felt sick knowing that many of the editors who had accepted an invitation and would showcase their work across their social channels would never get those chances, all because one man decided he was more important than any other designer. Kanye felt like his time, name, and influence were bigger than that of the new designers and he chose to present his new collection and distracted the media’s attention. I wish that he had worked with the council who creates the New York Fashion Week schedule, to create a time for his show, when it wouldn’t alter the schedule that people took months to plan out.

I am perfectly fine with Kanye West creating his showcase and presenting it to the masses. What I do not agree with is Kanye believing that he is better than anyone else and valuing his time more than anyone else’s. In the fashion industry, people have to work together to create a successful season, not fight each other to see who gets the most press. In this world, people have to work together. I love everything that I do in regards to fashion, but when people start crossing lines, I won’t let it slide.

Respect is a powerful thing, and until Kanye learns some respect, I don’t think I can stand behind him.
