Going into college my biggest worry was that I was going to have to have a roommate. I have always been an isolated person who certainly enjoys her alone time, so the idea of having someone literally living in the same room as I was honestly kind of scary having heard numerous horror stories of having a nightmare roommate. Luckily, the move-in day my freshman year of college eased all of these concerns.

Freshman year I met not just my roommate, but also my first college friend and someone who is still one of my best friends today. I found my roommate Emily through a Facebook post and we decided to be roommates before we even got to know each other, so it felt as if we were almost random roommates. Yet, the day we moved in we immediately hit it off and by that night were cuddling in my bed watching old Hannah Montana videos as if we had been life long friends. Ever since that moment, my love and appreciation for having a roommate has only grown.

This year, I am rooming with another one of my best friends Madelon and feel extremely lucky that I have had the opportunity to room with some of the best roommates and friends I could ask for. Having roommates has shown me a unique type of friendship that I wouldn’t change for the world. While I was originally apprehensive to have a roommate, I am now so grateful for having her there.

Me, Madelon, and Emily together on Oxford College’s campus.

My roommates are not just someone I live with—they are my family. Madelon and Emily have been my best friends, my role models, my support system, my therapist, my motivator, my nurse, my company and so much more. I never thought having a roommate could change my life for the better so much. I find myself looking forward to seeing them when they come home and very lucky that they are willing to listen to me rant about the littlest problems and be there to tell me to workout and do my homework when I need to, but also to tell me to relax and eat my unhealthy snack when they know I need it.

I am forever grateful that I was thrown into a situation where I had to have a roommate because it allowed me to grow as a person, become more flexible, learn to become more social, but most importantly has introduced me to some of the most wonderful and interesting people I have ever met that I get to call my best friends. A big shout of to Emily and Madelon, thank you guys for being the best roommates and friends I could ever ask for and here’s to hoping for many more years of roomie friendship to come!
