Transitioning into college is an utterly new experience. You can feel like you’ve finally come to the right place or find yourself being homesick every five minutes. There’s no predicting to how you’ll manage the transition, but if you find yourself seeking comfort or missing your hometown friends, then maybe Greek life is the solution.

Greek life is one of the best ways to meet people with similar educational or social goals. It is an organization that dedicates itself to forming close connections with its members and focuses on giving back to its community. The following are four reasons that a sorority will enhance your college experience and why it might be for you.

1. Meet people you wouldn’t normally meet.

A sorority is an organization that recruits all sorts of girls with all sorts of personalities and across all majors. College itself is an environment where you can create new friendships, but it requires more input and finding ways to put yourself out there. A sorority provides you with that setting: to live amongst other girls, share perspectives, and create a network to meet the people associated with them as well.

2. Make long meaningful relationships.

Greek life does require a significant amount of time, but through this you will create long lasting relationships. Participating in weekly meetings, brainstorming fundraising ideas together, or simply giving each other advice will eventually lead to appreciating each other’s company and even seeking it. Being in a sorority usually requires for girls to share a living a space. Thus, physical proximity to friends is another bonding feature.

3. Become involved!

Sororities are more than what they are stereotypically portrayed as—superficial fit girls that hang out and do each other’s manicures. These groups are meant for girls to find their support system and give back to their communities. For example, one of the sororities at Emory University is dedicated to fundraising for the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. I spoke to one of the girls of this sorority, and I could genuinely identify her passion for the fundraising events they had towards their philanthropy.

4. Get out of your comfort zone!

A sorority encourages you to become socially savvy and places you in an environment that you might have not experienced yet. By being surrounded with girls that support you and want to get to meet you, you will be able to gain social skills and get out of your comfort. Eventually, this can lead to obtaining an outgoing personality or, if not, at least you will be able to speak confidently with people.
