6 Lessons Learned From Joining a Sisterhood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxford Emory chapter.

1. Never Judge a Book by Its Cover

Joining a social club was the smartest choice I’ve made so far in my college life. It has taught me more about life and people than any class by even the most distinguished professor could offer. Social clubs are microcosms of the real world. It teaches you about leadership, negotiation, organization, teamwork, morality, independence, trust, dedication, respect, dignity, and self-love. It also taught me never to jump to conclusions because people can surprise you once you take the time to get to know them. Joining a social club introduced me to some of my best friends, but I might never have met them if I had decided not to tap in!

2. The Sorority Girl Effect

Everyone always talks about the Sorority Girl Effect where a group of girls immediately seems more physically attractive than the girls would alone, but I think it’s more than that. Physical traits aside, all of my sisters are unique and beautiful in their own way in terms of her personality, dreams, goals, priorities, and passions. We are all different but our differences highlight each other’s strengths and make us more beautiful and well-rounded people as a whole. A sisterhood is like a colorful garden, we are all our own type of blossom, and together we create an impossibly beautiful world!

3. You Get What You Give

Like most things in life, you get what you give in a sisterhood. If you take the time to invest in new relationships with people, they will do the same for you! If you decide that your sisterhood matters, you will make it something good. On the flip side, if you decide you’re not really into it, nobody can change your mind. It’s all about maintaining a positive outlook!

4. True Friends Are RUDE

Sometimes the best friend is the friend who knows you so well and cares about you so much that they’re just plain rude. They will call you out when you mess up, not to be mean, but because they recognize negative behavior and want to see you live a better life!

5. Never Be Afraid to Dream a Little Bigger

Sisters inspire you to live a happier and more fulfilling life. They are always there to pick you up when you’re feeling down and to talk about the deep stuff in life. Joining a sisterhood also teaches you to stretch your limits and to get comfortable outside of your comfort zone. It teaches you about yourself and what you care about and provides you the backup you need to feel confident in striving to make your dreams a reality!

6. Home is Where the Heart Is

People come from all over and my sisters are no different. We all live away from our parents and families, but together we can create a sense of home away from home. We even have our “mom” types who are always there to take care of a bad situation. I think it’s important to have friends that are like family because they are there to support you no matter what!

Oxford Emory '18

As a Political Science Major and a French Minor, I have big dreams of making a positive difference in the world. In 2017, I had the incredible honor of being named Co-Campus Correspondent of Her Campus at the Oxford College of Emory University alongside Marine Bruno. Although I graduated from Oxford College, I will always have fond memories of my time with Her Campus. Even as I move on to a new phase in my life, I look forward to watching Her Campus at Oxford Emory grow!
