What to Wear For These 6 Genres of Music

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

So you bought your concert ticket to jam out to your favorite artist. Now all you need to figure out is what to wear.

Each genre of music clearly has a distinct sound, but there’s also a distinct look and style to these genres. You most likely won’t see a person in a tie-dye shirt and harem pants at a heavy metal rock concert (if you do they might be at the wrong concert).

But the fashionista in you wants to dress accordingly to the genre of music you will be jamming out to. So let’s see what options you have!

INDIE

Also known as independant music, indie can be broken down into indie pop, indie rock, etc. Because this genre is independant, there is a sense of being current and trendy. This can be transitioned into a trendy and hipster type of fashion sense.

Wide brimmed hats make a great fashion statement! It can dress up a simple, monochrome outfit or a solid color hat can easily compliment a printed outfit. A bonus is that it can also help avoid a bad hair day.

Indie music is known to have a chill and simple aspect to its sound, so why not translate that into a breezy boho dress? A boho dress can even go with a wide brimmed hat or can be stylish on its own. Celebrities like Florence Welch and Vanessa Hudgens are known for this type of bohemian style.

Accessories can make an otherwise boring outfit, more appealing to the eye. From stacks of necklaces, bracelets, and rings, jewelry is an easy way to look like you’re trying (when you’re really not). Women can rock the newest jewelry trend, chokers.

R&B

An urban genre at its finest, R&B concert goers can dress in cool and effortless streetwear.

Kylie Jenner is showing a great two-in-one combination of the crop top and boyfriend jeans. It’s comfortable, youthful, and overall a cool look that can transition from a day to a night R&B concert.

If you want a cool 90s throwback, flannel is the way to go! It’s such a versatile piece that can go with anything and flatters pretty much every body type, whether worn over a basic tee or tied around the waist.

RAP/HIP-HOP

Hip-hop is seen more as a culture and a way of life than just a genre of music and rap is probably the most popular element of hip-hop. Authenticity is something hip-hop and rap artists pride themselves in and authenticity can be shown through simple clothes that don’t say much or show much effort.

These matching his and hers snapbacks are a cute way of matching with your significant other or best friend while paying homage to the popular accessory in the hip-hop and rap industry.

Plain tees are a classic clothing staple that most people own and could be made even more effortless if it’s an oversized tee. This piece reflects the simplicity of old school hip-hop artists and can be worn with eccentric shoes and/or hats.

Adidas are almost 100 years old, but are still as popular as ever! You can rock the original black and white Adidas or branch out to other colors that can elevate your simple concert style.

ROCK

Rock music can be a little intense for some people, but that doesn’t mean you have to show it through your clothes with the typical dark attire.

An alternative to dark clothes are fun graphic shirts of your favorite rock band. Wearing anything from ¾ sleeves to a pink muscle tee such as this will let people know what concert you’re going to be rocking out to.

COUNTRY

Most people wear the standard denim shorts and cowboy boots at a country music concert. You can still incorporate this, but in a trendier and more modern way.

Overalls have been making a comeback! Why wear the typical blue denim overalls when you can wear neutral colors like black or white? Overalls also give you the freedom to wear a cute top underneath.

If you do decide to wear denim shorts or pants, tighten them with a rope belt. You can even match the belt with your shoes of choice.

Just because you’re going to a country music concert doesn’t mean you have to wear cowboy boots. Sturdy/chunky boots go great with denim jeans, shorts, and overalls!

POP

Popular music has a youthful aspect to it, so have fun with the outfit you choose to attend a pop concert..
