Spring Break Fun?!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

We all know the horror stories about girls disappearing during a night out on spring break. The important rules of vacationing have been drilled into our heads: the buddy system, never leave your drink unattended, never go home with somoene you just met. While those are great things to keep in mind, these stories show us even more dangers that sneak up on an unsuspecting vacationer.

  • While it may seem like a great idea at the time, you will regret signing up for that wet t-shirt contest when you’re older…and less intoxicated. Flashing everyone at the resort will bring you your 15 minutes of fame, but those pictures will last much longer than your vacation does. And your chest is not a topic of conversation you want to have with your father.
  • Day drinking! Thinking about escaping the cold of Oswego to go drinking on the beach with your friends sounds amazing. However, sitting in the hot sun all day dehydrates you enough without the help of alcohol. If you’re going to drink on the beach, make sure you have enough water with you to avoid heat stroke, dizzyness and dehydration.
  • One-night stands.  Although this happens every weekend at college, while vacationing, people tend to get the notion of “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” even if they aren’t actually in Vegas. T.V. and movies make sex in the ocean or sex in a hot tub look romantic and spontaneous, however, STD’s and unplanned pregnancies still happen on resorts, so make sure you have protection.
  • Most importantly, apply sunscreen! Coming back with the perfect tan is everyone’s dream, but the UV rays can have a more harmful effect than just burning your skin. Even if you never “burn,” UV rays can still give you wrinkles, loosening skin and even melanoma. Applying a lotion pf 15 SPF will still help prevent skin cancers better than if you applied no sun screen.
