Shadow -- A Poem

Consumed by night,

only the lamplights

on the sidewalk

to save me.

No eyes to speak

of what happened here,

only my strained sobs

trying to scream for me.

I’m surrounded by stone

walls of faces, faces of walls,

closing me in

but throwing me away.

Why were you walking,

breathing at that hour?

You walked right into

the darkness yourself.

You felt nothing but cold,

heard nothing but the stars,

spoke of nothing but the moon,

saw nothing but your shadow.

Let your heart grow cold.

Don’t listen to them.

Keep telling your story, the truth:

It was more than a shadow.
