Kayla Doan, a 22-year-old business administration major, loves to dance.
“I’ve danced competitively my entire life,” she says.
It’s no surprise, then, to learn that Doan is the president of Del Sarte at Oswego– a student run dance club that accepts any student, regardless of ability, and combines different forms and styles of dancing.
“Every semester, choreographers offer different styles of dance,” says Doan. “This year we have lyrical, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, Irish dancing, salsa and step routines.”
Kayla has worked her way up in the group, starting as a member in her freshman year.
“I joined the club first semester freshman year and began choreographing that spring. I’ve taught at least one or two dances every semester since. Last year I became treasurer, and really enjoyed the position,” she says.
This year, she became president. She says she wanted to step into the position in order to make positive changes to the group and help them grow as a team.
“By making our processes more efficient, this year we’ve had more time and resources for the fun stuff- ladies’ night dinner parties, date nights, fundraisers, new music and dance equipment,” she says.
Her favorite part, she says, is the relaxed atmosphere the club creates. It has helped her make close friends, and everyone feels welcome.
“There’s nothing better than going into the studio on a lazy Sunday afternoon, goofing off with your best friends and getting in a great workout,” Doan says.
Doan is also involved in clubs and functions in the School of Business at Oswego. She’s a hard worker both on and off the dance team – she completed her Honors Program thesis this semester.
Del Sarte will host its end of the semester recital May 7 and 8 in Waterman Theatre in Tyler Hall. Doan hopes more people will join the team next year and says “anyone and everyone is welcome to join.”
