With chilly weather fast approaching in Oswego, it’s time to whip out the pea coats and start experimenting with fun winter makeup, nails and hair.

Dark colors and metallics are in for this season. You can try O.P.I.’s Live and Let Die, a hunter green nail polish with a shimmery effect, or try Gold Shatter over Black Onyx for a crackle metallic effect. For a festive look, try You Glitter Be Good To Me, a deep purple metallic color that is sure to make you stand out from the crowd. Red colors are also in this season for nails. If you’re going for a deep, dark red color, try out Got the Blues for Red, but if you’re feeling daring, try The Thrill of Brazil, a bright red that will send tons of compliments your way. You can check out these colors, plus more at the JCPenney located in the Oswego Plaza or check out www.opi.com.

Let’s face it ladies, we enjoy experimenting with new looks for the seasons, so why should this winter be any different? Covergirl has put together fresh new looks for this season on their website, www.covergirl.com, including the Velvet Vixen look. Sweep the Tapestry Taupe, a nude shimmery color, eye shadow across your lids and top it off with black Covergirl Lash Perfection mascara. The lips are always essential to color this season, so add on some Vixen Blast Flipstick lip color to those lips and prepare for heads to turn your way!

Nails, check! Makeup, check! What’s left? Hair of course! The dry months of winter can dry out your hair as well as cause breakage, split ends, static messes and hair loss. It’s extremely important to nourish your locks during the harsh winter. Luckily, there are many great and affordable nourishing shampoos and conditioners on the market. Garnier Fructis developed the Fall Fight line which prevents hair loss as well as nourishes the hair. Try a leave-in conditioning cream like Garnier’s Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioner for smooth, sleek and soft hair. Having problems picking out a new shampoo? Visit www.garnierusa.com and take the Garnier Fructis Quiz to find out what product best works for your hair.

To compliment your silky hair, try out new styles and hair accessories this season. If you have long hair and want to spice up your look, try cutting some heavy bangs to add a bit of an edge to your do. If you have short hair, try adding some soft waves or curls for a cute, sophisticated look. Hair pins are always a fun accessory to add to your hair. Try adding pins with metallic sparkles in your hair for an effortless and classy look.

The winter months gives us ladies an excuse to accessorize with cute hats, so start taking advantage of it! Conductor-styled hats add a laid-back look to your wardrobe; www.target.com has a tweed conductor hat by Mossimo Supply Co. for the affordable price of $8 in a neutral brown color, so you can pair it with anything. Retro-styled hats are hot on the market these days. Macy’s has a cute Nine West wool knit hat with a subtle yet sophisticated flower on the side that’s sure to add some class to your wardrobe. It comes in black, heather grey, ivory and rouge. Add it to your holiday wish list or treat yourself to this classy hat!

Ladies, the possibilities are endless this season. Be sure to try out these tips and go crazy experimenting. After all, ‘tis the season to look fab!

Kaitlin Provost graduated from SUNY Oswego, majoring in journalism with a learning agreement in photography. She grew up in five different towns all over the Northeast, eventually settling and graduating from high school in Hudson, Massachusetts. Kait now lives in the blustery town of Oswego, New York, where she can frequently be found running around like a madwoman, avoiding snow drifts taller than her head (which, incidentally, is not very tall). She has worked for her campus newspaper, The Oswegonian, as the Assistant News Editor, and is also the President of the Oswego chapter of Ed2010, a national organization which helps students break into the magazine industry. She hopes to one day work for National Geographic and travel the world.
