Going out in Oswego, especially in the winter, can be quite the ordeal. Here are some of the things you should know to stay safe and warm while going out in the coming months:

Let’s start with the most important question of the night: What do I wear?

It really depends on where you’re going, a casual house party or a themed frat party? Whatever it might be DO ask your friends for advice and make sure to browse their closets for outfits.  This might be a no-brainer for some, but DO wear underwear because you don’t want to risk flashing people when your skirt rides up.

Also, consider the weather and definitely DO wear a jacket especially when you see snow on the ground. Buy a cheap going-out jacket that you won’t care about when it gets spilled on. Investing in a leather jacket for colder nights is an essential to your Oswego wardrobe.  Other basics you should have in your closet for going out are high-waisted skirts, crop tops, and fun statement-making jewelry.

When it comes to shoes, DON’T wear heels if they’re uncomfortable and you plan on walking a long distance in them. Trust me, the blisters that you will have the next morning are not worth looking extra good for one night.  If you do decide to wear heels, make sure you DON’T go to a dirty frat in them if you don’t want to get them ruined.  And most importantly of all- DON’T run in heels!! Also, DO get a few pairs of boots for winter – it’s a great idea to look cute and keep warm.

You DO need to bring out these necessities:

  • Room keyDON’T bring out other keys like to your car or the mailbox just in case you lose
them and DON’T count on your roommate bringing the key in case you don’t get back together
  • ID– to get into the building without the RAs laughing at you
  • Lip-gloss – turns chapped lips into a super shiny and kissable pout
  •  Cell phone– make sure you DO have numbers for the D Bus, A Bus and a taxi in your phone when you’re trying to get a ride back. DON’T use your phone to drunk text/ call anyone!
  • Money – enough for the bus, bars and food

Make sure to put these in a chic over-the-body purse, clutch, wristlet, or your bra.
Also, DO keep track of your friends and always follow the buddy system so you’re never alone.  In case you forget all these tips when you’re out, just remember to have fun and be safe!

Kaitlin Provost graduated from SUNY Oswego, majoring in journalism with a learning agreement in photography. She grew up in five different towns all over the Northeast, eventually settling and graduating from high school in Hudson, Massachusetts. Kait now lives in the blustery town of Oswego, New York, where she can frequently be found running around like a madwoman, avoiding snow drifts taller than her head (which, incidentally, is not very tall). She has worked for her campus newspaper, The Oswegonian, as the Assistant News Editor, and is also the President of the Oswego chapter of Ed2010, a national organization which helps students break into the magazine industry. She hopes to one day work for National Geographic and travel the world.
