10 Reasons Why You Should Study Abroad in Australia

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

Have you ever considered studying abroad in the land down under? Here are ten reasons why you should definitely take the chance.

1. One word: Vegemite. Often described as ‘a mixture of salt and battery acid’ by foreigners, Vegemite is one of Australia’s favorites breakfast spreads accompanied with butter on toast. Don’t knock it before you try it!

2. Lions, Tigers, and . . .Kangaroos? Meet some of Australia’s native wildlife. You can’t deny you’ve always had the urge to take a selfie with a kangaroo like T-Swift…

3. Studies have shown that participating in a study abroad program can double your chances of getting employed after college. Research also found 25% of study abroad students earned a higher starting salary than their peers, and 96% of students found an increase in self confidence. I think it’s time to start packing!

4. The “scenery”. Australia has produced some of God’s greatest gifts to the world (a.k.a Chris and Liam Hemsworth). Need I say more?

5. Free time to travel and see the country. It is possible to cram all of your classes into two or three days. Watching ‘lectures’ online is also extremely common, and in most instances, attendance and participation is not compulsory. Take advantage of these perks and go see the country! You won’t regret it.

6. Did I mention the drinking age in Australia is eighteen?

7. You can work with a student visa. Studying abroad in Australia can be expensive, however students are permitted to work up to 40 hours per fortnight. A part time job will assist in expanding your travels during the semester and assist in covering your rent and groceries while you’re there! Minimum wage in Australia currently sits at $17.70 AUD. Not bad!

8. Australia is home to some of the world’s best universities, consistently ranking in the top 50 in the world for engineering, humanities, arts, health, technology, science and more! Probably one of the major reasons why it is the third most popular study destination in the world.

9. There’s no language barrier! All you will need to worry about is learning the native slang. ‘Shrimp on the barbie anyone?!’ (Just kidding- don’t say that).

10. You will make friends to last a lifetime. The next time you make the trek back to Australia, not only will you have a free place to stay but a bunch of Aussie friends to reminisce on that one time you went snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef.

There are lots of benefits of studying abroad, especially in Australia. From the food, the scenery, and the memories, you will have an unforgettable time. If that’s not enough to convince you to study abroad in Australia, make sure to check out the @Australia Instagram account for more incredible pictures!
