10 Things I Hate About You – A Her Campus Movie Night Review!

I just recently went to our first Her Campus movie night, and it was SO much fun!! I really loved hanging out with all of the new members (and the returning ones, of course!), and taking a break from the stress of classes to just watch a movie with everyone was really nice. I was actually really looking forward to the movie the most, because 10 Things I Hate About You is a movie that has been on my “To Watch List” for ages, and now I finally got to watch it!

I’m not typically one to pick a rom-com movie to watch first, but lately, I’ve been going through a whole phase of them (not really sure why). So when 10 Things I Hate About You was the final pick for our movie night, I was so excited because it was definitely a movie I was interested in watching for a long time. And after watching it, I can certainly say I wasn’t disappointed!! Honestly, the main reason why I liked it so much wasn’t even the romance aspect of it (and that’s what I came into this looking for), it was the movie’s main female character, Kat. I love how the gender roles were reversed, making Kat the more aggressive and domineering character while the movie’s main male character, Patrick (played the insanely attractive Heath Ledger), was a lot more chill and laid-back. I also loved how unapologetically feminist Kat was throughout the film, never being afraid to speak her mind and to reject some of the societal norms at that time. She reminded me a lot of myself, and I really liked how they emphasized this aspect of her personality a lot throughout the film.

Another major reason why I liked this movie so much was the plot. I’m a sucker for the good old fake dating trope (only in this case, both characters were not willing participants), and they end up falling for each other. So I really loved that this was an older movie that had this kind of more modern romance trope, with a strong feminist protagonist! Now I definitely know what all the hype was about, and I’m so glad I got to watch it for the first time with the lovely ladies of Her Campus Oswego!!
