Your Who/ What/ When/ Where Rundown of NYFW 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

If you have had any social media interaction in the past week, it’s likely you’ve seen something somewhere about New York Fashion week. The mecca for next spring and summer’s most exquisite fashion trends and designs, bloggers and socialites alike flock to the Big Apple to partake in the annual fabulous festivities. As for me, I spent the last week under a blanket (okay but when am I not?) scrolling in awe and envy of the haute couture that just doesn’t do my laundry day groutfit justice. For any of you that missed the posts and wants to keep up with the social buzz, fear not! Here is your Who/ What/ When/ Where runway rundown of New York Fashion Week 2017!

Who:

The real question is who not? Anyone who is anyone in the fashion and entertainment industry was there repping themselves and fellow designers. This year’s it-girl getting all the buzz was Kaia Gerber. The barely 16 year old had a knock-out first fashion week ever as a runway model, headlining multiple huge shows like Alexander Wang’s WANGFEST and the Marc Jacobs show. As daughter of coveted runway model Cindy Crawford, I guess you would expect nothing less. Fashion week favorites like the Hadid sisters, Adriana Lima, Hailey Baldwin, and Sofia Richie were all seen on the runway this year as well. The endlessly and enviously cool Slick Woods was seen on the runway strutting edgy and iconic styles for Jeremy Scott’s Moschino show and Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma show, who’s neon outer space theme was literally out of this world.

What:

Speaking of Rihanna, along side her Fenty couture show, she dropped her Fenty Beauty makeup line that is now available at Sephora. Her inclusion of over 40+ shades to accommodate any and every skin tone, her killer highlighters, and creamy contour sticks are making this line a huge success! Sephora can’t keep anything in stock. As for the big trends to come out of this year’s NYFW, we saw a huge range of colors and palettes from all the designers. Ruffles and stripes paired with pastel colors and prints made a huge breakthrough this year’s event, and are definitely going to be seen in many spring and summer 2018 collections. The menswear look consisting of tailored boyfriend style jackets and pants, as well as high collared blouses are turning wear to work styles into runway gold. This look was showcased by many designers like Oscar de la Renta, Brandon Maxwell, Jason Wu, and Tom Ford to name a few. Textures and palettes like bold sequins and bright leather were seen on the runway from designers like Clavin Klein and Ralph Lauren.

When:

New York Fashion Week is a semi-annual event that spans from 7-9 days twice a year in September and February to showcase collections from the worlds top designers for the upcoming seasons (Spring-Summer for September and Fall-Winter for February). It is one of four major fashion weeks in the world known as “The Big 4”, with Milan, Paris, and London fashion weeks following after NYFW ends. Quick trip to Europe anyone?

Where:

We know where the 4 biggest fashion shows of the season are but where exactly do the shows take place? Every NYFW designers try to push the edge more and more with location- adding to the overall impression they want their attendees to have. After all it’s not completely about the fashion but rather the feeling we get from the fashion, so ambiance plays a huge role. Pier 59 studios is always home to some of the most elite shows. This year we saw more designers taking shows outside like Alexander Wang’s WANGFEST that took place at night outside with blaring bad ass music and bright floodlights. It looked so incredibly raw and fit the mood of the collection entirely.

So there you have it! Your Who/ What/ When/ Where of New York Fashion Week 2017 Spring-Summer collections. This year’s event was stunning to say the least and I cannot wait to see what all the designers have in store for fall/ winter Fashion Week. See you on the runway!
