Whether you’re an passionate football fan who takes off your shoes to participate in the infamous “Defend The Shoe” Ohio State Buckeyes chant, or are at the stadium simply for your Instagram feed and to hang out with friends, fall Saturdays are always a big day for OSU students across campus. No matter your reasoning, when you get ready to enter The Shoe to watch our Buckeyes, be sure to have these game day essentials.
Restrictions
Just like entering a concert arena, the main goal of Ohio Stadium staff is not only to encourage fun and safe behavior, but to make sure all those entering the stadium are of no harm to students, players, or any other fans they may interact with. Excluding the obvious restrictions on weaponry, some Buckeyes would be surprised to know of the heavy bans on most big bags and purses, large professional cameras, posters of any kind, laptops, and seating cushions with back support and zippers. It is best to comply with staff members and do proper research before game day to ensure the fastest and smoothest entrance to all the fun.
What to bring
We’ve all been there – frustrated with ourselves for not packing something important. And due to Ohio Stadium’s bag policy, there is little room to bring much, so here are some staples to remember.
Once you’ve secured your 5x8x1 wallet, clutch, or belt bag (my personal go-to), don’t forget your iPhone to scan your digital ticket at all entrances. And while some cameras are prohibited, a cute digital one has never hurt anybody. A chance to capture you and your loved ones all dressed in scarlet and gray will always be allowed – just be mindful of those around you when deciding an appropriate time to snap a pic. For our hotter games, I advise packing travel-size sunscreen, deodorant, perfume, and a pair of sunglasses that may just save you from the heat and blinding sun. And with Ohio’s unpredictable weather, keep a plastic poncho in your bag to stay dry during unexpected rain.
For our winter games, you’ll be substituting not only your outfits but also some bag items as well. Alongside your snow boots and heavy winter jackets, your bag could benefit from the addition of hand warmers, warm headbands and earmuffs, and some gloves.
It’s important to remember that the most crucial things can’t be put into a bag. Loved ones, a good attitude, and some school spirit are always what’s needed at The Shoe. Be ready to always have fun with Buckeye Nation, cheer on fellow classmates, and I’d say leave anything blue at home.
