Students Get a Lesson on Life, Work, and Cupcakes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

In case you missed it, this weekend was OUAB’s “Sweet Event with Katherine and Sophie of DC Cupcakes” at the Ohio Union.  President Gee, parents, students, siblings, and, of course, Katherine and Sophie were all in attendance for a delicious night of cupcakes and laughs.  The sisters began the evening by talking a little bit about their journey to owning DC Cupcakes, a story that left everyone in the audience inspired and ready to quit their jobs to pursue their own crazy dreams of opening a bakery.

Katherine, a former Political Science major, worked in fashion and retail for Gucci after graduating from Marymount University in Virginia.  Sophie graduated with a major in Microbiology from Princeton and worked in finance.  Both sisters agreed that it was their love of baking together and the lack of time they had that motivated them to open Georgetown Cupcakes.

After both quitting their jobs, they used their own savings to fund their new business.  They were extremely nervous on the day of their grand opening, worried that nobody would come, but, to their surprise, Georgetown Cupcakes was a huge success!  Now, the two sisters own one of the most famous bakeries in the country, with it’s own television show on TLC (the new season of DC Cupcakes premieres at 8:00PM EST on October 9th), bakeries in three major cities, and a new one opening in Los Angeles in December.

Of course, the night was far from over, as they still had to bake some of their delicious cupcakes!  The duo chose to make Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with their famous Cream Cheese Frosting, a recipe that they deemed “perfect for fall.”  They chose three lucky audience members to help them; even teaching them how to create their “signature swirl” when it came time to frost!

Overall, the event was a huge hit with parents and students alike.  A Q&A session brought the night to a close, as people expressed their love for the famous treats and asked the sisters what their favorite recipes were (Katherine’s is Salted Caramel and Sophie’s is Chocolate Hazelnut Ganache, in case you were wondering).  What was everyone’s favorite part?  The cupcakes, of course!  Nearly 700 cupcakes, made by Katherine and Sophie themselves, were available after the show for the audience members to enjoy.   Needless to say, it was a very sweet event!
