Less Is More: Revamping Your Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

I’m sure everyone and their mom has heard of minimalism, but if you haven’t, it’s defined as, “a trend in sculpture and painting that arose in the 1950s and used simple, typically massive, forms.” The style has turned into a phenomenon, from living minimalist to home décor. There are many ways you can take your space and revamp it, while barely doing anything at all.

White Bedspread

A simple way to clean up your space is to add as much white as possible. White creates the illusion that your space is larger, and can create a light and airy aesthetic. And since your bed is the first thing people see when they walk into your room, it’s best to keep it far from the busy- side.

Greenery

Okay, it’s no secret that succulents and plants are a major trend right now. No one can get enough of the little suckers (and if you’re a serial plant killer, they are very resistant to death lol). Adding greenery to a simple space creates a more serene and zen space, without breaking the bank.

Wood Accents

Clean wood accents add warmth to a space, while still keeping the simplicity and crisp aesthetic. I highly recommend using the same type of wood throughout the whole space, particularly a lighter wood (like ash or birch). These light woods also create more light in a space, versus a dark wash that would add busyness.

Light

To make a space seem, well, brighter, I highly recommend adding any source of light that you can. You may have a room without much natural light, but by adding fairy lights or candles, you can really make a space seem more inviting. Opt for a candle that doesn’t have a crazy outward design and has a scent that genuinely relaxes you. The whole point of minimalism is to simplify your life and create more simplicity in your mind, so don’t overcomplicate your candle scents.

Overall, you can do whatever you want in your own space. Minimalism allows you to relax in your room and draws attention to a few of your favorite pieces. Take a ride on the ~simple~ side if you’re looking for an easy way to clean up and clarify your space!
