Kaitor Kposowa, ’12

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

Name:  Kaitor Kposowa
Major:  Psychology
Year:  Senior
Hometown:  Cincinnati, Ohio (Although his parents are from Sierra Leone)
Twitter Handle:  @kaitorkposowa

HC:  What are you involved in here on campus/Columbus area?
KK:  I’m the news director and anchor for Buckeye TV, a reporter for The Lantern, and a student clerical assistant for WOSU Public Media (the PBS affiliate here in Columbus).

HC:  How did you snag the job as news director and what, specifically, do you do?
KK:  I was in Theater 300 and the current news director at the time graduated so our advisor asked me to take over.  I organize our team, send out emails to keep everyone on the same page, see story ideas from conception to completion, anchor, create the rundown and script, and then edit the newscast.

HC:  Give me a break down of a typical newscast.
KK:  It starts with a couple nights before creating the rundown, or the schedule.  We collect several news packages, arrange weather, and figure out who will be the sportscaster.  That day we print out scripts for the director and talent, read through, the crew will get the equipment ready, sound check, then we shoot the anchor lines.  After that, postproduction happens where I edit.

HC:  What is your career goal?
KK:  I was formerly going to become a clinical psychologist, but realized this past summer that I didn’t love psychology enough to pursue a Ph. D. in it.  After a lot of introspection and talking with people close to me, it became clear this was a much better path to take.  Broadcasting is the perfect way for me to combine my love for people and media.  Every day is a new experience and I’m always learning something new.  So, I don’t really get bored.

HC:  What are your plans for after graduation?
KK:  Attending graduate school at Ohio University to start my Masters of Science in Journalism.

HC:  What are some of your hobbies?
KK:  Hanging out with friends is obviously something I do a lot of.  I consider myself a movie buff.  I watch films all the time.  All genres.  All time periods.  I also keep up with box office stats, awards and other movie industry news.  I’m the same way with music.  I follow it closely.  Michael Jackson is my favorite artist.  I’ve been obsessed with him since childhood.  I like sports and the Internet, as well, so I guess I’m just an entertainment junkie.

HC:  Any cool internship opportunities you’ve gotten?
KK:  I got to be a production assistant intern for Discovery Communications, Inc. (Discovery Channel) on one weekend that they came to tape in Columbus.
