Healthy Habits: #9

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

Thanksgiving. It has FINALLY arrived. It’s time to spend a couple days at home, wear those fat pants and constantly be offered food by your grandma. This is both a curse and a blessing. Yes, I love my family and everything they provide me but I’d rather not have to move up a jean size along with that. Here are some tips to survive the short break that is centered around yummy, yummy food!

1. Make sure you’re hungry when you eat and not just bored. Now that Mom is around to help with chores and school is on break, it’s easier to find yourself just wandering into the kitchen and aimlessly standing in front of the fridge. Here’s a link of good ideas to help get you past that boredom. (http://www.popsugar.com/smart-living/Free-Ways-Entertain-Yourself-Home-30926585)

2. Eat a higher protein diet if you’re going to be working out less. Protein will keep you full longer. On Turkey Day, stick to a bigger portion of meat and a smaller amount of stuffing and yams. Also, let everyone else get their food first. You’re less likely to take a bigger portion and there will less when it comes time for seconds.

3. Continue to work-out at home! Running or biking outside is always great. If it’s too cold try doing this tabata workout (20 seconds on/10 seconds off)

Upper body circuit (Repeat 4 times):

                        Pushups

                        Plank

                        Tricep dips—dining chair works great!

Lower body circuit (Repeat 4 times):

                        Wall sits

                        Jump squats

                        Walking lunges

            Cardio (Repeat 4 times):

                        High Knees

                        Burpies

                        Jumping Jacks

4. Find other activities that keep you moving. Incorporating the family is always fun. Playing Wii with my grandma is hilarious and taking my sister out bowling brings some healthy sibling rivalry to the holidays! Helping to clean the house, dancing around to music and doing some shopping are other ways to burn some extra calories.

I hope everyone enjoys their break and has time to reflect on what they are thankful for! Staying positive will always help you reach your goals, even if you slip a little on break there is always time get back on track.

My name is Josie Walter. I'm a third year at THE Ohio State University! I love my buckeyes and this campus as a whole. I am in school to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a specific course of Pre-Health. Originally I am from Wilsonville, Or just 20 minutes south of downtown Portland. (Yes, Portlandia is a realistic comparison to the city). I was however born in Las Vegas and thats where my HEART still is. With a couple jobs, trying to maintain an active lifestyle, stay on top of school work and have great friends life has flown by! I am determined to make these last couple years I have at OSU the absolute best!
