Easy and Cheap Halloween Costumes for People Who Do Not Want to Try

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

The year 2020 is painfully dragging on, but the fall academic year is flying by. Halloween is already a few days away, and if you are anything like me, you still do not have a costume. Maybe your costume procrastination is due to the dreariness from the COVID year, your entirely empty wallet or maybe you just do not like Halloween. Whatever your reason is, I am here to help. Here are some easy and cheap costume ideas for those of you who do not want to try:

Smarty Pants

Buy a bag of smarties, put on a pair of jeans, and glue or tape the smarties to your jeans. This is as easy and cheap as it gets.

Party Animal

A Party Animal costume is perfect if you are planning on going out for Halloween. It is functional for moving around and not a costume you will have to worry about ruining. All you need is animal ears of your choice, a party hat and, if you are really feeling it, a black sharpie to draw on a nose and whiskers.

Smart Cookie

Another play on words and another easy and cheap costume idea. If you want to buy or make your own giant cookie to wear, go for it, more power to you. However, you could just glue some cookies to an old shirt and wear your graduation cap. That is what I would do.

Unicorn

A unicorn costume can be what you make it. You could make it very elaborate and professional-looking, with pretty colorful make-up and wear a multicolored tutu. Or, you could do it the easy and cheap way (a.k.a. my way). My way consists of buying a $2 kids unicorn horn from Target and buying some $3 sparkles to glue to my face. Boom. Unicorn.

Holy Guacamole

This is one of my personal favorite costumes because I love guacamole and because I am a perfect angel. You can find a $15 guacamole t-shirt on Amazon, or if you do not want to do that, simply wear a green shirt. Then, buy a $5 halo from Target or Party City. When you put it all together, you will be holy guacamole.

50 Shades of Grey

First of all, the books are way better than the movies. Second, this costume could not be any easier. Wear multiple shades of gray. That’s it. If you do not have more than one shade of gray, tape a gray color palette to your body. It can not get more obvious than that.

Nerd

This is a classic costume idea that never goes out of style. This costume idea is especially perfect for those of us who normally wear glasses. First, get some glasses and wrap a piece of scotch tape around the center of the frame. Second, buy $8 suspenders from Party City or Amazon. Last, put your hair in some dorky hairstyle that people will make fun of you for.

Ghost

Do you not want people to see your face this Halloween? This is the costume for you. Cut eye holes out of an old white bed sheet and put it over your head. This costume gives you a free ride to pretend Halloween is not even happening.

Violet Beauregarde from Willy Wonka

I like this costume idea because I am always chewing gum and it is super easy and cheap of course. Wear a blue outfit, buy $5 blue face makeup from Target and chew some gum. The only thing you have to worry about is not swallowing your gum.

Captain Underpants

If this costume is good enough for Emma Chamberlain, it is good enough for us. Get an $8 red cape from Party City, put on a neutral-colored sports bra and wear men’s briefs. If you do not own a pair of men’s briefs, you should. They are the perfect loungewear and sleepwear.

Tom Cruise Risky Business

Last, but not least, we have the college girl’s favorite Risky Business costume. I can understand why it is so popular because it is easy, comfy and cheap – exactly what I like. All you need is an oversized men’s dress shirt from your dad’s or boyfriend’s closet, black sunglasses, long socks and a pair of men’s briefs. I am telling you, you need a pair.
