Dealing with the Semester Switch: Three Surprising Perks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

I don’t know about you guys, but I am totally dreading the switch to semesters.  I hate change, and planning for the switch has been a huge headache!  However, although it is a hassle, there are positive sides to the switch (who knew?).

1.    We Will Be on the Same Schedule as Most Other Universities!
Over 90% of Colleges and Universities in the United States are on a semester schedule.  Getting on the same schedule as other schools will be beneficial for a number of reasons, one of the most important being that it will be much easier to transfer credits!  Other perks include an easier time with study abroad programs and having the same breaks as friends at other schools!

2.    Jobs and Internships!
Since most schools are on semesters and get out for the summer in May, Ohio State students have a slight disadvantage entering the job market or starting internships, as it is almost an entire month later than everyone else.  Although we may miss our late start, on the new semester schedule, we will now be able to apply for and start internships and jobs around the same time as everyone else!

3.    No More “Midterms” Every Week
I don’t know about you guys, but last quarter, I had a “midterm” in at least one class every week, from week three to week 10!  On 15-week semesters, this will no longer be the case!  This will make life a little less stressful for all of us!

Whether these reasons have convinced you that semesters will be a good thing or not, the switch is happening, and the best way to handle it is to prepare!  If you haven’t already, make sure to talk with your Academic Advisor about your Transitional Plan!  It seems far off, but it will be here before we know it!
