Rachel Dorrian is the captain of the OSU Women’s Club Hockey team. She plays Right Wing Forward and has been playing ice hockey for 10 years.

Her Campus: Why did you decide to come to OSU?

Rachel Dorrian: I came to OSU because I wanted to attend a university that was far enough from home but close enough so that I could go back if I needed to. Out of every college campus I visited, Ohio State was by far the most impressive. As soon as I got to Columbus (as cliché as it sounds) I just knew that this was where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life and once I got accepted, I didn’t even have to think twice about saying yes.

HC: What is your favorite part about OSU?:

RD: I love the amount of resources that OSU has as well as the amount of activities on, off and around campus. The free workout sessions, counseling tips, help with papers, tutoring, everything you could ever need is right at your fingertips!

HC: What do you miss the most when you are away from home?

RD:  I miss my family and friends and the proximity to the beach. That’s about it!

HC: What is the hardest part about being a student athlete?

RD: The late-night practices, definitely. We practice Mondays and Wednesdays from around 11:30 p.m. until 1 in the morning.  Since I’ve been playing club hockey for three years, its become second nature, but sometimes I’d rather be sitting on the couch with my roommates and watching a movie on a Monday night.

HC: The best part?

RD: The best part is being able to play the sport that I’ve loved since I was ten. I also love that I can continue to play, as well as receive a top notch education.

HC: How long have you been playing hockey?

RD: 10 years

HC: How did you get started?

RD: The family next door had a son who played hockey and the neighborhood kids would always play street hockey after school. I signed up for a roller hockey league and after a couple years switched over to ice hockey and have been in love with it ever since.

HC: Where is the coolest place you’ve been for a tournament?:

RD: Back in high school, my travel team went to Stowe, Vermont. It was for a tournament up there.

HC: Best memory?

RD: Definitely playing outside at the Progressive Field Indian Stadium my freshman year. We got to play against Michigan State outside on the iced over field and it actually started snowing. The snow was blowing in our faces as we played and it was such a surreal experience! Afterwards we got to stay and watch the varsity men’s team play, which was also pretty cool.

HC: What is a major hockey accomplishment of yours?

RD: My freshman year, I got the Rookie of the Year award and that was super exciting because I was new to OSU and I was still trying to find my place at the school. It was really cool to have that kind of recognition as such a young player

HC: Goals for the future?

RD: The goal is to play for a women’s league to keep my legs fresh. It would also be really cool to come back and coach a high school team. I’m thinking about going into teaching so it would be cool to be able to do both.
