3 Reasons Why You Should be in Love with Mr.Darcy, from Pride and Prejudice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OSU chapter.

Everyone had their own childhood love interest and that’s valid. However, if you have never heard of Mr.Darcy from Pride and Prejudice then I can guarantee you’re missing out. I bet I could convince every last artery in your heart to fall in love with him by the end of this article because there are so many reasons why Mr. Darcy is the most lovable character of all time. The first of those being that he is the most dedicated friend to those he trusts. Second, he absolutely respects and protects his younger sister and his house staff. Finally—the most important reason—Mr. Darcy gives one of the most romantic speeches of all time to his intended lover.

A True Friend…

First and foremost, Mr.Darcy keeps a small gaggle of friends with him at all times, including a Mr. Bingley. If you’re familiar with the story, you’d know that Mr. Darcy tries to save his friend’s feelings from, what he interprets, a hopeless attraction to another woman. Mr. Darcy doesn’t want Mr. Bingley to suffer at the hands of love so he convinces his friend to move back to London where he assumes he is safe. His intentions were pure and dedicated because if my friend was hopelessly in love. The most I’d do to help a friend would be to tell her to hope for the best. Mr. Darcy does the next-level version of this. He’s dedicated for sure.

The Ideal Family Man…

Next on the list, he defends his sister. Going beyond just defending, he also listens to her and respects her wishes and needs. Once again, I am not sure if I am capable of this as a sister myself. I love my family, don’t get me wrong, but I would never allow myself to be at the beck and call of my younger sister. She gets to struggle as much as I did. Besides exposing myself as a mediocre family member, I express this is to emphasize how much Mr. Darcy is willing to do for the people he loves dearly. When he sensed that his sister was in danger of also falling in love, Mr. Wickham, who just wants money, he made sure to protect her and shun the man in question. Now, even though Mr. Wickham deserves to be called out and held accountably, Mr.Darcy is just too nice to do that as well. He doesn’t aim to bring suffering to Mr. Wickham’s character. He’s just perfect like that. He is always a gentleman and always choosing to be the bigger person.

He’s a Big Romance Guy…

Finally, the most important reason to fall in love with Mr. Darcy is that he is so utterly romantic. The way he confesses his love to Elizabeth and shows true vulnerability and thought is amazing. He didn’t ask for her snapchat or leave a few annoying Instagram comments on her posts. No, he would never do that—not because there was no Instagram when the book was written, but because even if he was alive now, he wouldn’t have. He has high standards and he wants the woman he loves to know that he is capable of being a mature lover. When he says, “In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” any girl would swoon. If a man said that to me I would simply pass away from how full my heart would feel. It seems odd now to think of a man who uses the word ardently. Seriously, who uses the word ardently? Only a man of real taste. In addition, he waited until they were alone to say these words so it would mean more. There is nothing more annoying than saying words like these in front of an audience to get a reaction. No, he wants a genuine reaction from Elizabeth.

Truly, I say with all my heart that I want a Mr. Darcy, and I think you should too. You deserve to want him. Maybe I’m just a hopeless romantic who likes fictional characters with well-written character arcs, but I could never forget a person like Mr. Darcy and I’ve fallen in love with him all over again while writing this piece.
