HCO: Can you tell us a little bit about the University of Oregon Running club? The club meets everyday at 3:00 p.m. on the intramural soccer fields, open to any type of runner.  During off-season, the coach Tom Heinonen, will tell the athletes to go on a run of their own, often suggesting a good place to run for the day like Alton Baker Park or Hendricks Park. During the fall cross-country season, Tom will give us daily workouts of long runs, tempo run, or speed workouts. During the winter/spring track season, Tom provides us with a time to do a track workout on Historic Hayward Field once a week, and other workouts.

HCO: How did you get involved with running club? I wanted to stay in shape and find a group of people to run with.  I heard about the running club through some friends and decided to try it out.

HCO: So far, what has been your favorite part about being a member of Oregon Running Club? Finding the running community of Eugene.  I have made some great friends though club and it has informed me of running events happening in Eugene throughout the year.

HCO: What is your favorite song or type of music you like to run to? I usually don’t run to music, but if I did I would like to run to upbeat music, like the Black Keys.

HCO: What is the team dynamic like? Do you spend time with each other outside of training? The whole team is very friendly; many of us spend time together outside of practice.  We often have team brunches over the weekend.

HCO: Any Advice for people who want to start running? Start running.  Start slowly and with a short distance and slowly work your way up. Come to running club and the coach will be able to help you out!

HCO: You’re currently a sophomore studying Geography, what are your post-grad plans? I would like to attend grad school in preferably Boulder, CO and study climatology and meteorology. I also would like to go to Antarctica and study penguins.

HCO: What three items would you bring with you on a deserted island? A soccer ball, a friend, and some kale.

HCO: If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be? I would want to have healing powers.  As an athlete I’m always in some kind of pain, it would be amazing to be able to heal myself as soon as the pain starts.
