The Two Products I Use Instead of Foundation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

I’ve never liked the hassle of putting on foundation each day. It feels so time consuming and I don’t think I ever actually figured out how to put it on perfectly. There was a time when I would put it on everyday, but eventually I got too busy in the mornings and just didn’t have the time for it. While I didn’t have the time for foundation, I still wanted some coverage on my skin to block out any redness so, I did some searching on the internet, but I wasn’t all that devoted to finding something and other things began to take precedence. Recently, I’ve found that TikTok is the hub for beauty trends, and tips and tricks. I find myself really trusting quite a bit of the advice I see on TikTok because I know that the majority of the people making the videos are not being paid for their opinion. I love that you can find beauty items that people hold in high regard and know that that is the actual truth of what people think. While some tips and items don’t end up working out (like the KVD Good Apple foundation), many end up working extremely well. I have found many products that I now use daily from TikTok. Two of those are for your face, but are both extremely different products. The first is the Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment, and the second is the CeraVe Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen. I have found that when I use either of these products (not both together), my skin looks like I’m wearing foundation. They both are so effective, even though they are completely different products with different goals. I’m going to describe what each is like along with the goals of each product below. I’ll also give my pros and cons for each!

Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment

This comes in a cute little green jar. The substance itself looks like a moisturizer, but green and it has a nice scent to it. Many people say that you should apply liberally, but I personally have found that a little goes a long way and so I do one scoop with my finger for my chin, cheeks, nose, and side of my face, and then a very small scoop for my forehead. It goes on to your face green and at first looks like it’s going to wash you out. After a couple seconds it melts into your skin and doesn’t change your skin color at all. What it does do is minimize areas of redness on your face. After putting this stuff on my face really does look smoother, clearer, and one-tone. I use this every single day after a little bit of my moisturizer. I’ll sometimes set it with a little bit of setting powder, but I often forget. I then just apply my makeup as I normally would! It makes a great base and I love the way my skin looks after I use it.

Pros

  • Covers redness well
  • SPF 30
  • Dewy finish
  • Nice smell

Cons

  • Feels oily after it is first put on so you have to let it sit for a couple minutes before you move on with your makeup
  • Can stick in hairline if you don’t rub it in well

CeraVe Face Sheer Tint Hydrating Sunscreen

This is a newer product to me, and I’ve only started using it recently. However, I’ve been very impressed by it! This is a sunscreen with SPF 30 that is meant to not look like a sunscreen. I’ve used some of CeraVe’s other sunscreen products and they have left a horrible white cast on my skin, and interacted strangely with my moisturizer which resulted in small clumps on my face. I read many complaints from people of color who were extremely disappointed by many sunscreens and the white cast. This sunscreen is different though! It has a “sheer tint” which goes on to any skin tone and doesn’t leave any cast. When you squeeze it out of the bottle it looks exactly like foundation, but when you put it on it really does go on sheer. Somehow, though, it manages to help with redness and evening your skin tone. My skin looks fresh, one-tone, and soft after putting it on. It doesn’t feel oily after you put it on either and feels like nothing once it dries. It looks like I have foundation on and I just put the rest of my makeup right on top of it.

Pros

  • SPF 30
  • Sheer, but provides coverage
  • Works for people of color
  • Light weight
  • Unscented
  • No white cast, but still retains the main ingredients of other CeraVe sunscreens

Cons

  • None that I can think of!

The great thing about these two products is that you get lightweight coverage with SPF so you don’t have to worry about applying both foundation and sunscreen! Both are moisturizing and so you can also use them without a moisturizer if you wish.

NOTE: Neither of these products are full or heavy coverage. They are not foundations, and thus do not act exactly as foundations do. They will not work for blemishes but do work for redness. I use concealer on any blemishes after I apply either of the products and it works perfectly.
