Last Monday was fashion’s funkiest night of the year. Celebs rocked their ‘getups’ at the Costume Institute Gala, otherwise known as the Met Gala. This annual fête celebrates the opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. Fashion industry experts consider this night, hosted by Vogue, to be the fashion world’s best red carpet affair. And from the outrageous Instagrams, it seemed to be just that.

This year’s style inspiration came from the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibit, “PUNK: Chaos to Couture.”  If you didn’t tune into Instagram or Twitter, I’m sure you can already imagine how Hollywood’s A-listers strutted the various styles from glam rock to goth to grunge.

We ultimately owe Vivienne Westwood a big thank you for developing modern punk and introducing a new wave of fashion into the mainstream. This movement was born in the 70s and has been influencing the fashion icons and our own personal styles ever since. We may not be able to rock the gold crown and crucifix earrings like Katy Perry, or an all-sheer gown like Anne Hathaway, but there were many trends on the red carpet that we can use as inspiration in our everyday lives to make our look a little more edgy and “punk” like.

Studs & Spikes:

They are the most popular and easiest way to make your outfit a little less boring, and a little more edgy. Go gung-ho with a studded jacket, or add just a little bit of edge with a studded accessory or heel. This trend has already made its way onto our campus with the appearance of many studded shorts.

Leather:

Leather isn’t just for rock ‘n’ roll or biker chicks anymore, it’s one of the hottest trends of 2013 on and off the red carpet. Leather can dress any outfit up or down. Pair a leather jacket with a graphic tee and jeans for a casual, yet edgy image, or throw it over an evening look to add a little rock ‘n’ roll to your night. How to wear leather in warm weather? Embrace leather this summer with a pair of shorts or a skirt, or by choosing pieces in cool colors.

Punk Hair Color:

We might have already embraced the fashion fad of dip-dyed and colorful streaks in our hair last year, but the stars on the red carpet are still all about this trend. Celebs such as Diane Kruger and Ivanka Trump added temporary pops of color to their tresses for this years’ Met Gala. I’m expecting this punk theme to surface once again Memorial Day weekend; keep an eye open for it at Sasquatch.
