We all have a life outside of classes that can sometimes take over the main reason why we came to college- for an education. Of course, we need an outlet to take us away from studying or responsibilities but those outlets can sometimes compromise the value of our education.
Whether it is learning to have a balance between social and school obligations, balance between family and friends, or balance between work and school; the activities we get involved with outside of academics have a tendency to draw us to other obligations.
I noticed that I needed to learn a balance because I found myself shirking responsibilities like showing up to lectures or completing an assignment because I decided to become more available for another activity; a party, an extra shift at work, or watching another episode on Netflix.
If we are committed to learning how to balance, it’s important to recognize that now is the perfect time to be recognizing the way we make use our time! We won’t ever be able to realize our actions have an effect on our education without reaping the consequences of having to cram because we left no extra time to study more for that midterm, or needing to miss a social event because we have a procrastinated paper due the same night.
These few examples as to why balance is important to incorporate in our college life are not just experienced by me. While I am on the hunt for a more balanced lifestyle, I find that my friends and classmates are making these same choices. Chances are a lot of us are feeling the same way and it is only a matter of conversation that can bring us steps closer to incorporating balance in our lifestyles.
