Last Week’s Most Popular Entertainment Stories

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

What’s big in entertainment nowadays?

The entertainment magazines love to spread gossip and news about the celebrities that have caught the public eye. Sometimes the news is good and sometimes it is information that is probably best kept in the private sphere. It is certainly difficult, at times, to figure out which stories are true and which are simply gossip. So after scanning various websites, I have pulled some of the top entertainment stories from the previous week.

Etta James passes away

Family, friends, and fans gathered for the funeral of Etta James at a Los Angeles area church on Saturday, January 28, to remember the legendary rhythm and blues singer. James died on January 20, 2012 at the age of 73 after battling leukemia and other ailments. Most famous for her rendition of “At Last,” she became revered during her decades-long career for her passionate, soulful singing voice. Her version of the song has become an enduring anthem for weddings and commercials. James won four Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement honor and was also inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Her 1967 album, Tell Mama, became one of the most highly regarded soul albums of all time. Both Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera performed at James’ funeral, and Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy.

Jennifer Aniston buys new home

Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Jennifer Aniston since her time on Friends. Now it seems as though Jennifer Aniston has bought a new house in Bel-Air, California. The house is rumored to be 8,500 square feet with four bedrooms and was designed in 1965.  She recently bought the house for $21 million. Some of the perks of Aniston’s new house include more than three acres of land, views of the city and ocean, a pool, a guesthouse, a wine cellar, and a vineyard.

Demi Moore Hospitalized

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher were an interesting pair when they first got married and their age difference was a large part of the gossip that surrounded the couple. Now, after announcing their divorce, Kutcher and Moore are going their separate ways and trying to move past their failed marriage. Unfortunately, Moore seems to have taken a wrong turn along the road to recovery. Her hospitalization earlier last week ignited a spark of rumors as to why the 911 call was placed, including exhaustion and a seizure. It has been revealed that the real reason behind Moore’s hospitalization was due to her use of Whip-Its. Whip-Its are usually made from balloons filled with nitrous oxide inhalant and are often used by teenagers.

SPJ to replace Demi Moore in movie Lovelace
Following the word that Demi Moore is dropping out of Lovelace due to her personal issues named above, Sarah Jessica Parker is set to replace her. Parker will now play the role of feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the Linda Lovelace biopic. The film stars Amanda Seyfried as Linda Lovelace, a woman who gained fame for her starring role in the X-rated film Deep Throat. Moore and Parker aren’t exactly interchangeable in terms of their screen presence. I am curious to see what Parker will bring to the role of Steinem.
