Join the Podcast Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Podcasts have made a big come back. Talk radio is one of the best, if not the best, outlets for nonpartisan news. Today, there are a number of ways to listen to podcasts: NPR One app, Podcasts app, Spotify, NPR online, and many more! I personally use the NPR One app. I have recently turned two close friends on to the podcast life. My new favorite thing is to share different episodes with my friends and fam. To crush two falsities about talk radio: podcasts are NOT always political and they are NOT all boring. I listen to podcasts in the mornings and evenings when I cook or when I do some solo yoga in my room. I am providing you a short list of just a few of the wonderful podcasts that are out there.

For any BAD ASS, well-educated feminists that want to enrich their minds in politics, culture, and the world, these are for you:

  1. Pod Save America: Four former aides to President Obama host comedians, journalists, and activists to discuss politics, the media, and enduring the Trump presidency.
  2. Two Dope Queens: Two black females, who just so happen to be best friends, co-host a live comedy show in Brooklyn. The Two Dope Queens have some of their favorite comedians guest star to discuss stories about sex, relationships, race, living in New York, and more.
  3. Fresh Air: Join Terry Gross, the queen of interviews, as she partakes in intimate conversations with a wide range of stars, from Alec Baldwin to Donald Glover, Larry David to Tom Petty.
  4. TED Radio Hour: Based on talks given by riveting speakers on the TED stage, each show is centered on a common theme- such as the source of happiness, why we lie, how to be successful, growing up, etc.
  5. Call Your Girlfriend: “A podcast for long-distance besties everywhere,” co-hosted by two best friends who break down current events in pop culture and politics.
  6. Freakonomics: The authors of the award-winning book Freakonomics host social scientists, entrepreneurs, and more to discuss conversations concerning mysteries behind human nature and everyday life, with topics such as cheating, crime, and parenting.
  7. Hidden Brain: *For curious minds* Social scientist Shankar Vedantam unveils unconscious patterns that drive us, biases behind decision-making, and triggers that shape our relationships.
  8. Code Switch: Journalists of color provide advice for when conversations of race and identity become uncomfortable. Funny, and at times cringe-worthy, stories are told and discussed.
  9. Popaganda: produced by Bitch Media, a feminist response to pop culture, this new Bitch podcast analyzes gender, race, class, and sexuality in popular media. Topics include sex work, food writing, issues in the Trump administration, sex discrimination in the tech industry, and stand up comedy. This show says everything you’re feeling and everything you want to say.
  10. Pod Save the People: DeRay Mckesson is a gay African American, organizer, and activist that dives into conversations about culture, social justice, and politics by analyzing language, history, and people in charge of shaping this country. He also talks about steps that we each can take to make a difference.
