How to Throw the Ultimate Friends-giving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

The term “Friends-giving” has been defined in recent years as the celebration of Thanksgiving with your closest friends leading up to the actual holiday. Millennials dubbed the term as a holiday for the friends and is a new adaptation of the traditional holiday.

For most, Thanksgiving is a time when you head home, see your family and have a giant meal. In a way, Friendsgiving serves as a training for young adults to host their own Thanksgiving dinners when they grow up, but just without the arguments and drunk uncles. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get all of your friends together for some good bonding and memory making.

  • Plan ahead

    • This is arguably the most difficult part of Friendsgiving. Having to think ahead, invite people and prep shop for the food in the peak of midterm season. Yikes.
  • Define your “vibe”

    • Are we going for a casual theme, pj’s and breakfast and movies all day? A classy dinner party? Or a night on the town? Friendsgiving is whatever you want it to be, and you can determine what you and your friends want to do based off of your relationships. Just communicate your idea and make sure everyone is on the same page!
  • Buy food

    • Whether you want to cook a full blown turkey dinner or you just want to order Chinese takeout, make sure dinner is taken care of. It’s your main event!
  • Plan activities

    • Eating dinner is fun, but playing drunk charades is even more fun. There are tons of apps you can download for charades or trivia. You can bust out some board games like Monopoly or Uno. My personal favorite thing to do on Thanksgiving is to watch the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Special.
    • Another thing that is really fun to do with your friends is to write down nice things about each other and put them in a hat or bowl and then read them aloud. You can substitute this with what you are grateful for, things you are looking forward to, inside jokes, fun memories, whatever you like!
  • Delegate

    • You cannot plan an entire dinner and stay on top of mid-terms, extracurricular activities and work all alone! Talk to your friends and divide the work evenly.

Now you’re ready! Put on your turkey eating pants and plan the best “Friends-giving” your friends have ever seen. Also, don’t forget to enjoy the next few weeks before Christmas officially takes over!
