The Great Gatsby Part 2: Party Like Gatsby

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

The highly anticipated Great Gatsby movie hit theatres last Friday. After the wildly lavish movie, you may be feeling a bit inspired to throw your own 1920’s speakeasy themed party right here at the University of Oregon!

The world of main character, Jay Gatsby, is all about elaborate, luxurious parties with expensive food, live bands and a one of a kind location. People long to be invited to these phenomenal parties. However, we are collegiettes living on a budget, so while we might not be able to afford a mansion, we can still follow these tips and tricks so we can also party like Gatsby.

Decorations:

Gatsby’s parties are extremely over the top, so for your Gatsby party use bright lavish colors such as gold, silver and purple for decorations. Drape party beads across tables (these can also be worn by guests) and fill mason jars with candles. Finally light up the party with twinkling string lights around windows or strung across the ceiling.

Food:

The best plan for food is small bites with a big punch of flavor. This way guests can wander around the party and snack with guests as they chat or dance. Serve platters full of appetizers and small desserts with big flavor like pigs in a blanket, lemon cupcakes and sliced baguettes with flavorful toppings.

Drink:

It wouldn’t be a Gatsby party without fun drinks! Pop champagne (or sparking cider if you are under 21) or create a more intricate drink like mint juleps, which were common social drinks in the 1920’s. Serve them in champagne flutes (purchase plastic ones to save money) or the more vintage inspired mason jar. Make sure to start the night with a memorable toast!

Music:

In Great Gatsby’s time, guests would have partied to the sound of jazz. Mix upbeat jazz songs with the newer sounds of the Great Gatsby soundtrack that boasts music by Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey and Jay-Z.

Outfit:

Dress in Great Gatsby fashion! Provide guests with party beads, feathers headbands and boas for guests to get in character. For more in-depth fashion tips, refer back to Great Gatsby Part 1: Fashion.

Most of all enjoy the party. Great Gatsby parties are meant to be remembered, so make sure to have fun!
