My name is Alyssa Arcos, and I am a junior here at the University of Oregon. It is crazy to think that I have lived half of my college career already. Time does indeed fly by. I was having a conversation with my roommate; she has never been the emotional type. Last week in the middle of coming home, she started crying. Now, this girl never cries. I have been friends with her for almost three years, and I have maybe seen her cry twice in my life, so this caught me by complete surprise. Of course, we all laughed and joked because she is not the type of person to get emotional, especially in the middle of a football game. A few days later, we got to talking. She said the reason that she got so emotional was that at the football game at that moment, she was thinking, “these are the moments.” She said that during the football game, she was sitting there reflecting. She was in the stands with her friends and boyfriend and was thinking about how grateful she is. Sometimes in school, we forget to sit back and enjoy the moments. I realized that I am halfway done with the fall term before I even knew it. I think we sometimes forget to sit back and enjoy the stage of life that we are in. With college, there is a lot of pressure to succeed and focus on school. Trusts me, I think that is super important. It is also our time to grow as a human, and have fun. These are our last few years as adolescents and not entirely in adult mode. Sometimes we need to take a step back and enjoy the stage of life that we are in. I had met with this lady recently, and at fifty years old, she stated that she enjoyed her college years a little more. She took herself so seriously that when she looks back, she has a little bit of regret. So as we have way through the term, remember to enjoy where you are, take a break, eat some ice cream. That is what college is for.
