5 Ways To Spice Up Your Workout Routine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Trying to fit a workout into your busy college schedule seems impossible sometimes. By the end of a long day, I rather watch the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” than go on a run. Discipline is definitely involved when you are able to put on your workout clothes, instead of curling up in your warm bed. However, I think there is a way you can stay ahead of the game so you don’t fall victim to those excuses that prevent you from going to the gym!

  1. Make a Workout Calendar

I am lucky enough to live with one of my workout buddies, which makes it easier to stay active. One of our most effective ideas, is our “Lizzie and Carolyne’s Sexy Bod Calendar.” We decorated our calendar and put it on our door so we always are reminded of our progress. After each workout, we jot down what we accomplished and for how long. It’s very satisfying to set goals and accomplish them and compare from where we started to now.

  1. All About The Playlists

Music is a must to amp up the intensity of your workout. Certain songs can help you get to the next level or help you to relieve stress. Whether you want to put a little swagger in your step with some Kanye West or kick butt with the White Stripes, music has been proven to make your workout more effective and stay motivated!

  1. Don’t Be A Loner

Staying motivated is easier if you have someone to help you stay on track. Working out with a friend, a team, trainer, or even bringing your dog will make you feel more excited to get out the door and start moving! Social media is also another option. Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, etc. are great to find blogs to connect with others and share ideas/goals.

  1. Change Your Scenery

Keep your workouts interesting by switching up where you workout. Always on the treadmill? Try exploring a new running trail. Yoga or Pilates in your dorm room? Go outside and set your mat outside to soak up the sun! A routine in the same place will start to feel boring and you will feel less motivated to keep up with your workout goals.

  1. Reward Yourself

Now, when I say “reward” yourself I don’t mean with a greasy cheeseburger. Update your workout wardrobe with cute workout tank-tops or those Lulu Lemon yoga pants you’ve been eyeing. Pamper your blistered feet with a pedicure or relax your muscles with a massage. Whatever it is, you deserve it!

Creating a plan that works for you is a foolproof way to reach your health and fitness goals. Everyone is different, so experiment and incorporate your own tips with the ones listed above. Eventually, you will find what works for you and be on your way to a hot and healthy body!

Elizabeth is a full time advertising student at the University of Oregon, where she manages her time between school, work, running, blogging and having somewhat of a social life. As a native Oregonian, she cannot wait to move to L.A. when she graduates and somehow find a job that makes enough money to live there. Until then, you can find her exploring running trails by day and wearing her stilettos by night. Her current obsessions are giving back to the community through various volunteer projects and on a less important note, bedazzling everything in sight. You can follow her on Twitter @LizzieBayer!
