These five groups or artists will add a little variety and spice to your iPod’s “Recently Added” playlist. Below are selections for everyone to do homework to, enjoy a Saturday night to, or bust a move to. Get ready to watch these groups blow up in the future.
The Dean’s List
The Dean’s List is a hip-hop group based out of Boston, Massachusetts. The group consists of Mik Beats, DJ Mendoza and Sonny Shots. The lively feel with bumping tracks is perfect for your workout or a party playlist. “Dear Professor” is a remix of The Band Perry’s song “If I Die Young” with an upbeat twist.
The Weeknd
Abel Tesfaye is “The Weeknd.” He is a singer-songwriter from Ethiopia now living in Canada. Tesfaye released “House of Balloons” in March 2011 and his second mix tape, “Thursday,” in August of 2011. The Weeknd’s music is characterized by deep melodies and thought provoking lyrics. Above all, The Weeknd’s music inspires emotion. It’s an easy listen perfect for those rainy afternoons. “Gone” from the Thursday mix tape is sure to get everyone’s hips swaying and feet tapping.
Beach House
Beach House was one of many up and coming groups featured at the 2011 Sasquatch festival. Reminiscent of classic Californian surfer tunes, Beach House is cool and airy. Make sure to check out their song “Lover of Mine.”
Aer
Another group from Massachusetts, “Aer” is made up of David von Mering and Carter Schultz. The two mix electronic backgrounds and guitar rips with breathy easy lyrics for the perfect combination of laidback groove, but with enough energy to dance to. An all time favorite and must listen is “Water on the Moon” from their mix tape The Reach.
Late Night Alumni
Similar to the artist “Kaskade,” Late Night Alumni has a mellow trance like feel to it. Made up of five members—Ryan Raddon, Becky Jean Williams, John Hancock, Finn Bjarnson—Late Night Alumni has found success with the European youth in the clubs and is making the crossover to the U.S.. Give “In the Ashes,” from their album Haunted, a listen.
