No Costume Needed: Alice in Wonderland Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

Halloween is approaching quickly, and some of us may not have figured out our costumes quite yet. But fear not! Read on for inspiration on how to take pieces from your closet to emulate the style of classic movie characters (whether it be for a costume or an everyday ensemble). With the first installment of ‘No Costume Needed’ falling right before Halloween, it seemed fitting to focus on a more theatrical favorite: Alice in Wonderland.

Alice

Alice is a curious dreamer with a sense of wonder that is all her own. Throw on a chambray blouse, white denim and combat boots for a polished yet ready-to-explore look. Add youthful and whimsical accessories such as a black hair bow or a bold statement bag for that “Wonderland touch” and to express your personal style.

Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter is a unique individual that seems odd on the outside but is full of creative insight and wisdom. Start with simple basics: grab a white tee, black leggings and brown boots. Disregard the minimalist trend and layer on as many bracelets, scarves and any other accessories as you please (because we’re all a little mad). And lastly, top off your look with your favorite hat.

Queen of Hearts

Think red and sparkle as you channel the Queen of Hearts’ bold personality. As a queen, you can never be overdressed. Choose a simple black or white dress, throw on a red cardigan and slip on your favorite pair of flats. Hearts are an obvious necessity with this outfit, but they can also be overwhelming, so try something smaller like heart-shaped earrings. Let your inner royalty shine through with a statement necklace, and, if you’re feeling brave, a crown.

Cheshire Cat

Mischievous, loveable, and illusive can only describe the Cheshire Cat. Stick with darker purples and black for a sleek and mysterious look. Grab a striped top and a dark skater skirt and pair them with any flat or sandal. Obviously this is the time to flaunt those cat-eye sunglasses you purchased over the summer. Add some cat accessories or a fringe bag for an added nod to the cat inspiration.

White Rabbit

Though a minimal character, Alice would never have found her way to wonderland with the White Rabbit. In essence, he is the ringleader of the show. Pair a stylish white top with any color of skinny jeans and layer a bold colored peacoat. Sturdy black boots will get you to all of the important places you need to be. To ensure that you are not late to your very important date, add your favorite watch and you’ll be good to go.

Taking style cues from the characters of Alice in Wonderland may seem like an over-the-top task. And, especially if you’re going for a full costume, these looks would seem to be costly. However, most of these items can already be found in your closet, making for one simple (and affordable!) Halloween costume.
