Dorm Room Crafts Part 1: The Desk

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

Freshman year seemed like it was just yesterday! I remember when my parents moved me to Corvallis, and half way through the drive up I realized I had zero decorations for my jail cell of a dorm room. But I made it work, and my dorm turned out to be pretty cute! Here are some tips for doing the same with your dorm room this year.

1&3: Shabby picture frame and magazine holder turned chic

Needed:

  • Goodwill finds (such as the ones pictured: picture frames/magazine holder)
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush

This one is pretty self explanatory, and you can turn any ugly Goodwill finds into something really chic. The picture frame I got before was really dingy, but with a little bit of paint, it looks brand new again!

2: Statement Letters

Needed:

  • Cardboard letter (you can get them at Michaels)
  • Paint
  • Sharpie

For this one I just painted different sized dots on a cardboard letter and outlined the dots to create a leopard print on the canvas. There are many ways you can design your letter to make it your own!

4: Twine and Polaroid

Needed:

  • Twine
  • Commands hooks or push pins
  • Clothespins (available at Dollar Tree)
  • Polaroid pictures

When I went to Vegas I went into the Polaroid store and printed a couple photos for a dollar each.  You can do this by printing photos at Fred Meyer, and then use the twine and clothespins to easily hang the pictures from your desk!

No matter what you decide to add to your desk, make sure it is something that reflects your personality and that will make you want to get work done. This article is the first in an upcoming series of DIY-inspo for your living space (whether you live in the dorms or off-campus), so be sure to check back soon!
