An Open Letter to My Best Friend’s New Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

Dear Best Friend’s New Friend,

Congratulations!

Finding friends in college is very difficult at first, however you’ve gotten the attention of someone who may be the most amazing human being you ever have in your life.  Since she is so close with you, you must be pretty amazing.  With that being said I can’t wait to meet you!  Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I think we should skip the small talk so I can give you some very useful tips on how to maintain your precious relationship with our best friend.  Over eight years of sleep overs, arguments, binge watching television shows, and eating pizza, I now have the serenity to handle her at her best and worst moments.

1. If she is sad, comfort her.

There is nothing more important than being a shoulder for her to rest her head on when she’s on the verge of a mental break down.  If she is crying, let her cry. Trust me, it’s uncommon for her to show how she’s feeling, so on the rare occasion that she does you should allow it.  Also, cry with her.  The best form of bonding is unleashing your emotions with your bestie.

2. If she is talking about a guy, put up your guard.

When she loves, she loves hard.  It is pivotal that you remain skeptical of whoever this boy is until you know his intentions.  She has a really difficult time trusting people, but somehow still gives people the benefit of the doubt.  She also tends to go for the men who aren’t deserving of her, but give her the space to figure this out on her own before kidnapping her happiness.

3. When the boy hurts her, bring ice cream.

We both knew he was no good for her and she can do much better anyways, but she’s still hurting.  Ice cream fills the cracks in any broken heart.  Anything Ben & Jerry’s with some peanut butter in it will help her heal in a matter of seconds.

4. If her stomach hurts, keep an eye on what she is eating.

She has the strangest allergies.  Some days she can’t have gluten and sometimes dairy tries to murder her.  Now that you know this, just keep some snacks in your dorm that can accommodate her strange diet requirements.

5. She loves being at college with you, but she misses her mom.

Do not be offended if all she says is, “I can’t wait to go home this weekend.”  Her mom and her family are her backbone.  I’m sure you will have the pleasure of meeting them soon if not already, and you will understand why they mean so much.  Make sure you give her alone time to call home daily, because those moments are precious to her.

6. Be patient.

She will have days where she is not her outgoing and bubbly self, but do not get mad.  Everyone has days that aren’t great so be sure to still be there through them with her.

I hope these six pieces of advice are helpful.  Her friendship is one of the greatest gifts you can ask for.  She is one of the most loyal, loving, and caring people you will ever know and you are so lucky to have her.  Although I am extremely jealous that you spend time with her everyday while I’m miles away, I know you will take care of her for me.  Can’t wait to meet you, see you soon!
