Tampon Tax gets the Ax in NY State!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Old Westbury chapter.

Ladies, our period prayers have finally been answered! After 50 years, feminine hygiene products are no longer taxable in New York State and I experienced this first-hand today in CVS where I enthusiastically explained to the male cashier that I was buying tampons to test it out! Turns out, he was not previously aware of the new legislation.

“Eliminating this regressive tax on women was a matter of fairness, and I am proud to have signed this legislation to right that wrong,” said Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who signed the bill back in June.  The law went into effect on Thursday and although some stores have not yet put it to practice, you can submit a request for a refund to the state Department of Taxation and Finance if you were charged tax after September 1st.  Cuomo predicts that it will save women up to $10 million a year! Time to stock up. #TweetTheReceipt
