This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Old Westbury chapter.

Experts detected a rise in hate crimes around the country a week after President Donald Trump was elected. The New York Police says that hate crimes are rising especially against the Jewish population in New York. According to Bloomberg, the NYPD noted that between Novemeber 8th and Febuary 19th there have been 143 hate crime complaints. That is 42% more hate crimes than the previous year. Also, 143 of the reported crimes, 72% were targeted at Jews. Muslims are the second biggest victims of hate crimes in New York. NYPD’s deputy commissioner Stephen Davis told Bloomberg that, “Based on the timing and the extraordinary increase we’ve been seeing, not only in New York but around the nation, you have to conclude that the presidential campaign was the major factor.” Are we really suprised at this point? But this is ludicrous.

The state of New York is planning to launch a text hotline so that reporting hate crimes can be easier for the public. So ealier this week, New York Governor Andrew Cumuo introduced a program to help defend agaisnt hate crimes.
