Junior Zambrano: Campus Cutie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Old Westbury chapter.

Name: Junior Zambrano

Born in: Arequipa, Peru

Hometown: Huntington, NY

Birthday: May 5

Major: Business Administration

Grad Date: May’17 (Junior)

Junior Zambrano is curentlly studying abroad in China, Beijing  for the spring semester. He took the time to talk about his experience abroad and shares his life story.

What is the most interesting experience you had as an OW student?

I am currently studying abroad in Beijing and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. Upon arriving to Beijing, I felt no such thing as Culture Shock. The reason is I’m from Peru and being here almost makes me feel like I’m at home. In Peru, when I first went back, everything was so close by and you could almost go anywhere you wanted without needing a car.

Have you ever experienced a “ha-ha moment”?

Yes! Two years ago I was at the gym just getting ready to play basketball. Out of nowhere, I lose control of my balance and then couldn’t get up from the floor. I lost consciousness right before the paramedics came. Luckily LIJ (Long Island Jewish Medical) was right around the corner! The best doctor there came in and saved my life during surgery. I spent about a month in the hospital before I was discharged. However, I needed to go through intensive rehabilitation to get better. Since I was in a wheelchair to start with. [Zambrano is currently working and is only disable on his right side] The experience really humbled me and motivated me to work even harder in school. I was able to finally finish my two years in Nassau before transferring to Old Westbury. I made the Dean’s List in both Nassau and Old Westbury.

What do you like to do during your spare time?

I love sports; I used to be very athletic in the past. I love watching and following soccer, basketball, and football. I always love to find out the news and scores. Right now, I’m still staying on top of the sports back home. Though they play really early for me, due to the time difference.

What are three fun facts about you?

I love helping others, I read a lot and I like learning new languages.

Earlier you mentioned growing up in Peru. Would you consider yourself bilingual?

I grew up in the United States since I was six years old! I am as fluent in Spanish as I am in English. Plus I’m currently studying Chinese Mandarin at UIBE (University of International Business at Economics).

What is something not many people know you’ re interested in?

I watch Mexican Telenovelas!

OMG ME TOO

I’m currently watching “Por Ella soy Ella” and “Teresa”.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Sure! I come from a poor family since I immigrated to U.S as a six year old.

Now I’m twenty-three years old and the first of my family to go to college. School is a lot more affordable and possible than people think even if you’re disabled!
