Bowing Down to Queen Rihanna (Beyhive Please Don’t Come for Me)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Old Westbury chapter.

Has anyone been paying attention to Rihanna lately? She really has been killing the game recently. I have always been a fan of Rihanna but I have been feeling her a lot more this year, especially since she put out her latest album, ANTI. Since her debut in the music industry more than ten years ago, she has definitely evolved. The bajan princess has more to her than her music though; here are some other reasons to love the “Work” singer:

1.  Her fashion sense

I can’t lie, I have seen Rihanna in some questionable outfits; and even in those she still manages to slay. It seems like she can wear anything and make it look good somehow. On her dress down days, she still looks cute. But for the most part, her style is immaculate. Her hairstyles are usually on point and go well with her outfits. She’s become a fashion muse for a number of men and women and has even gotten recognition for it. She’s been spotted at the front row of several fashion shows hanging out with some of the greatest designers. She also has a sneaker line with PUMA which I would definitely rock.

2.   She just doesn’t give a damn

Rihanna’s unapologetic attitude is one of the many things I admire about her. She simply doesn’t care what people think or have to say about her. When an internet troll tries to diss her, she checks them with some of the cleverest clapbacks. Some of her raunchy song lyrics would make a nun gasp or blush.  “Imma need you deeper than six, not a coffin, we’re not making love, tryna get nasty” – Sex With Me from her latest album. Not only is the artist open about being a chronic weed smoker, but just last week she rented out a hotel floor in Florida so she can smoke her weed and try on her wardrobe without any complaints or commotion.

3.  She embraces her culture

It’s no secret that Rih is an island gyal, especially when she opens her mouth. There are some artists that are from the Caribbean and you wouldn’t be able to tell. Did everyone happen to see the first half of her “Work” video? This had such a nostalgic feel to it. Not only did she bring me back to 2002, watching a Sean Paul video expecting a little boy in his pajamas to crash the basement party but it reminded me of parties which I’ve been to ever since I was a little girl. Every year she goes to Barbados and partakes in the island’s annual festival, Crop Over. Whenever this time comes around each year, I lurk on her Instagram profile to see what costume she’s wearing, what band she’s playing for, or if she posted a video of her whining up.

4.  Her body

Rihanna is no shy one when it comes to showing off her body. We’ve seen Rih’s naked body so many times that we may even feel like we’ve been dating her ourselves. When her nudes were leaked back 2009, instead of crying about it she embraced it, we’ve seen the star naked on many occasions since then. In April 2014, Rih posed nude for the French magazine Lui, when she posted her pictures on her Instagram, haters reported her account; eventually she recovered it but still! I’ve seen worse things on Instagram. Again in 2014, when she was honored with the Fashion Icon Award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards she wore a see through ensemble that was decorated in Swarovski crystals, paying tribute to Josephine Baker, the late singer/dancer . This dress revealed some of Rihanna’s admirable assets that have turned many heads.

Honestly, what’s not to love about the famous bad gyal? From her catchy tunes to her I don’t care attitude, she’s generated her own fan base called the Rihanna Navy. I wouldn’t consider myself a seal but if she keeps it up, I might have to enlist.
